2016 Moderator Election

On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination. Up to thirty candidates nominate themselves for the position.
You need 300 reputation to nominate yourself.
  2. Primary. The top ten candidates are chosen, if necessary, through voting.
You need 150 reputation to vote candidates up or down.
  3. Election. A final round of voting is used to determine the winner through Meek STV.
You need 150 reputation to cast your preferences.

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Nominations close in 6 days.

I'm Bryan and I’m volunteering for modship to help Arqade maintain the high quality it’s known for. The main reasons I think I’d make a good moderator are:

  • Good Attitude: I’m a friendly and easy going guy, and I keep a cool head in most situations. Important qualities in a mod, especially when dealing with aggravated users.
  • Knowledgeable about Site Rules: I have a very strong understanding of the rules of the site, including why those rules are there in the first place.
  • Open Minded: I aim to keep an open mind in any discussion, setting whatever biases I may have aside. I feel this is the best way to reach the right decision for any problem, and I’ve had my mind changed on more than one occasion.

If you want proof of any of these things you just need to look through my site history, but I’d argue the number of memes about me is proof I’m easy going, answers like this demonstrate my strong understanding of site rules, and comments like this show I’m open minded.

If elected the main activity change you'd see is that I'd devote more time everyday to moderating the site.

Thanks for reading!

Hello, my name is Dragonrage. I am a software developer from California, have released 2 mobile games, am an avid gamer, and have been a moderator for about 3 years for a fairly large halo clan.

On the Arqade, while I haven't been here as long as some, I have been extremely active both on the site and on The Bridge. I have been here almost every day since I created an account, have a very high helpful flagging percentage, am quickly approaching the silver badges in the review queues i haven't yet received it on, and am in the top .07% this year for reputation. I have a bronze badge in and will soon have one in . I am also active in LoL, Skyrim, and Clash Royale.

While I have not been very active in the past in regards to posting on meta topics, I have avidly followed them in order to familiarize myself with the workings of the site, and feel comfortable with the meta and have since begun participating more in meta discussions.

Based on this, along with my experience as a moderator on another site I feel like I am capable of taking on the moderator position and helping to continue to keep the quality of this site exceptional.

Good luck with your nomination! :). – Robotnik 5 hours ago

Thanks! @Robotnik – Dragonrage 5 hours ago

What other site are you a moderator on? I'm assuming it's not a SE site? – Wipqozn 5 hours ago

@Wipqozn correct, it is not an SE site, it is my halo clan's website. while it is not an SE site, I do have to deal with a number of issues moderators here have to deal with, such as dealing with disruptive members and settling disputes, among other things. – Dragonrage 5 hours ago

@Dragonrage how much of your clan leadership position translates to what you see your mod duties as? – GodEmperorDune 4 hours ago

@GodEmperorDune I think a lot of my duties as a leader in my clan will translate to moderator duties here. I have the ability to unilaterally close/open/delete/move/edit any topic or post, and the responsibility to not abuse these by targeting specific users with these privileges. Not only that, I help make and enforce policies for the clan to abide by, where enforcement can range anywhere from editing out insults, to deleting posts, to permanently banning members. – Dragonrage 4 hours ago

I also have to work with several other moderators who don't always see eye to eye with me, so I have to communicate with them and work through differences in opinion on policies and correct enforcement policies. I am also responsible for managing other ranks, some of which have some moderation privileges. I regularly am asked to explain my reasoning for my actions, and if I was wrong in what I did, I am completely willing to apologize and undo whatever it was that I did. Also, I have access to a lot of the same PII that I would as a moderator here, and have the responsibility of protecting it. – Dragonrage 4 hours ago

My name is Ryan, but most of you probably know me as Robotnik. I've been an active member on Arqade for almost 4 years. I'm an Australian developer and avid gamer with a Let's Play channel and prior experience moderating a Facebook group.

Content

I have bronze tag badges in 4 game tags, never had a post closed for anything other than 'duplicate', and never been in a position to earn the Peer Pressure badge, (all my Q&As being >= 0 score).

Site Moderation/Policy

I'm active in the review queues and a very prolific editor, including over 200 edits to Tag Wikis and Excerpts. I regularly browse older questions and answers to see if they need updating/improving (or closing).

I have raised many topics on meta, and have both swayed others and been swayed myself by points raised there. While some of my ideas ultimately did not have community support, they were all well received and civilly discussed, and I respect and regularly uphold decisions that I may not personally agree with.

Based on these points (and many more, ugh this character count!) I feel that I have the necessary experience/mindset to help moderate Arqade. Thanks for reading and your consideration. :)

I think you have an excess "been" there. – badp 22 hours ago

@badp Where? I don't see it. – Robotnik 22 hours ago

@Robotnik is the very definition of a moderate voice in many meta discussions. – fredley 21 hours ago

Agreed, Robotnik is very good at coming up with the best and most reasonable solution to a problem on meta. – angussidney 18 hours ago

@angussidney - Well there are definitely other voices with reasonable solutions on metas as well, though I do try to remain as impartial as possible. I will admit there are times I've argued a case that I've definitely felt strongly about though. But as I've said, I have (and will continue to) uphold community decisions even when my own opinions differ on the matter. :-) – Robotnik 18 hours ago

I just got one question for you. Lore or no lore on Arqade? :P – Zerjack 8 hours ago

@Zerjack On a personal level: I support Lore on Arqade. If the community ever decides to get rid of it, it'll "cut me deep, Shrek" but I'll support the community's decision. – Robotnik 6 hours ago

I was just waiting for your submission :) good luck! – pinckerman 6 hours ago

Good luck Mr. Roboto :) – Dragonrage 5 hours ago

Hello, my name is Evan, but most of you know me as Unionhawk or Uni. I have been a member of this community for 4 years, and an active member for 3. I am also a room owner in The Bridge, where I work to keep chat clean by pinning important messages, clearing stars as appropriate, moving spam messages to Android Hell, and even, in extreme circumstances, giving out kick-bans.

On the site, I am a silver badge in , and am still partially active in the tag, particularly in , where I am 5 answers and 42 score away from a bronze badge. I also have contributions in , , and .

On Meta, I have a bronze badge in , providing opinions in many, many different matters, including what suggested edits are appropriate to approve, developer-only knowledge, and unreleased content. I also often participate in policy-related discussions in The Bridge, for discussions that are not big enough to warrant a meta.

I feel that I have what it takes to become a moderator of this site, and I look forward to answering questions posed by the community in the coming weeks.

Hello there, I'm Arda Özkal, a 16 year old male developer and gamer from Turkey.

I've been a member of Arqade for 1 year and 8 months now. I visited on 327 days of it, and I'm currently on a 195 day consecutive visit. I have silver badges of most review queues. I like helping people and I'm semi-active on Meta. I have a history of community moderation on medium-size Steam groups and several forums.

Arqade is a huge Stack Exchange website and gets tens of questions everyday. It already has 6 moderators and they are already pretty good at what they're doing. I believe that I'm a person that can see and understand the issues. Thanks to the current moderators, the issues are nearly nonexistent, however there are some issues I want to bring to attention, mainly game-specific policies, for example ban of tech support questions of modded Minecraft.

What makes me different from other mods is that I can consider some stuff from a different mindset. A remarkable portion of gamers are minors and I believe that a moderator that can think like them would be a good addition to the website.

I am good at taking responsibilities and I believe that I have what it takes to be a mod.

I've seen helpful questions/answers from Arda in both Arqade and SO, then by coincidence met with him in real life. He is a great developer and a gamer and knows the culture of Stack Exchange very well. He has sh*t ton of games in Steam, knows how to play games, how to make games, how to moderate and manage communities. And is very passionate about this subject and helping people around him improve and learn more. He is strict on following established policies and demands others do as well. From his Steam: "I'm not your personal knowledgebase, ask your questions over at Arqade" :) – Esqarrouth yesterday

Best of luck with the nomination! :-) – Robotnik yesterday

The only one user m seeing under my question or answer in arcade..even if i want to help on any question m seeing ardaozkal's answer or comment. He is really a nice guy and m sure he will be the best fit for mod in arcade..Best of luck mate. – Leo the lion 23 hours ago

Great guy, knows how to work around things, dedicated in his work and a fine gamer. Wishing you all the best, Arda! – Haider 15 hours ago

I have to point out that, if you very much like the way he answers and asks questions on the main site, that probably means that you do not want him to be a moderator, since that will take time from him asking and answering questions: that is very much not what the position is about. – badp 14 hours ago

A moderator's time on the site is split between handling flags, handling meta, and handling chat. You don't even have Convention (10 posts with a score of 2 or more on meta), Sportsmanship (100 votes on answers competing with your own) or Copy Editor (500 edits), and you only got Caucus (one meta post scored +10) about 20 hours ago. I mean, you haven't even unlocked the 10k reputation privilege with access to most moderation tools for non-moderators. I don't know if you're ready for this position yet, even from an objective point of view. – badp 13 hours ago

@badp I think that they meant that I'm a helpful person rather than I answer and ask all the time. I answer and ask stuff when I'm completely sure about it. I'm not someone who tries to get reputation by playing as much games as possible (My post rate is rather low. On average, I post every 1.4 days), I just slowly play the games I like and answer questions about them, they probably consider my style good because of this. If I become a mod, this will not change as I already spend a lot of time on this website, I'll just refresh main site more while in chat to see the flag queues (and meta). – ardaozkal 13 hours ago

@ardaozkal yes, but how helpful you are in a Q&A doesn't necessarily translate in being helpful as a mod. A moderator is not supposed to be a remote controlled puppet that presses buttons for others when asked to. You also need to be the exact opposite of helpful, and you need to know when you should behave in which way. – badp 13 hours ago

@badp yes. Esqarrouth's comment is a very good comment because I sometimes attended his events (he used to organize Mobile Monday Ankara) and he probably is talking about my solutions and recommendations to the projects there. Also his words: "[He knows] how to moderate and manage communities. And is very passionate about this subject and helping people around him improve and learn more. He is strict on following established policies and demands others do as well." Again, I was/am a moderator in several places and I know how I should act. – ardaozkal 13 hours ago

@badp also about badges: Convention -> I have 9 posts over 2 score. Pretty near that badge. Sportsmanship -> My voting criteria is high. If you check some of my top answers, you can see that I upvoted other good answers too. Copy Editor -> You got a point on this one. Not much to say about this, I'm pretty far from 500 edits (~150 atm). Caucus -> Caucus is the "visit election and have enough rep" badge. However about 10+ meta posts I have two good answer badges from january and february. – ardaozkal 13 hours ago

@ardaozkal sorry I got confused. caucus literally is about visiting this page. – badp 13 hours ago

Best of luck to Arda for the election. I have seen plenty of his posts around the site, all being very helpful to fellow users, and he knows his way around anything to do with gaming and development. – Texenox 12 hours ago

@ardaozkal On your Profile page, you currently have an IP-logging image that reads "Just logged your IP lel.". I don't think I need to impress upon you that this is pretty unsuitable behaviour for a moderator candidate, but it does raise questions about your approach to accessing personal data, something which we, as mods, have quite a broad ability to do. I for one do not have much trust in your attitude, given this and several other events in the past. – fredley 10 hours ago

@fredley ahaha, logging is disabled on my server. All traffic runs through cloudflare so only IPs that would be recorded is cloudflare servers. – ardaozkal 10 hours ago

@ardaozkal Whether or not it is actually logging is sorta beside the point. It displays an attitude towards Personally Identifying Information which I view as totally incompatible with the role of moderator. – fredley 10 hours ago

@fredley sorry for the confusion and I'm removing that fake image. It had alt text of "not really though" since I first put it there though. Also, I think that I put it there back when Undertale was popular (as the text is in comic sans) and I think that I've changed a lot since then (been about 5 months), this applies to your statement of "this and several other events in the past" too. I respect PII and I'd never abuse PII. – ardaozkal 9 hours ago

@ardaozkal Not to mention you've googled for people's names before and used them in chat (without permission to share that info), which doesn't seem like much, but is a little concerning to consider, with the larger wealth of info mods get access to by default. – Ashley Nunn 9 hours ago

@AshleyNunn That was 3 months ago. That literally got into my nightmares. I regret doing that. I regret doing that everyday and I kindly say that this is my final stance on that because that is still emotionally hurting me, even when brought up or not. I want to say that I'm sorry to everyone who was involved and I want to also say that I'll never repeat such a rude thing. – ardaozkal 9 hours ago

I wasn't planning to vote on this election, as I'm not personally familiar with any of the nominees. But I think this comment thread is enough to motivate me to vote for the sole sake of putting one more ballot against @ardaozkal. – Iszi 8 hours ago

When it comes to such blatant disregard and disrespect for the privacy of the users in a community you're seeking to moderate, "3 months ago" or even "5 months ago" is practically "yesterday". (Never mind the fact that the IP logging image isn't even "yesterday's news" yet.) I don't care if it haunts your dreams for the rest of your life. You need a much longer, stronger, and consistently positive track record before you can begin to claim to have offset such reprehensible behavior. – Iszi 8 hours ago

And frankly, age becomes an issue here too. I've known several respectable and mature 16-year-olds, some of whom I would gladly nominate for a position such as this if they were in this community. But the behavior discussed and demonstrated here are clear indicators that you're not one of them. You've still got a fair deal of growing up to do. Much thanks to fredley and Ashley Nunn for raising these issues to the voters' attention here. – Iszi 8 hours ago

@Iszi you are free to vote against me, however feel free to stop by the chat and you'll see that I'm no longer like that and I've learned from my mistakes. – ardaozkal 8 hours ago

You seem to have missed my point. You may well be reformed, and I hope that you are. But the issues raised here are not trivial. Nobody would reasonably expect the users, whom you're asking to put utmost trust in you, to so quickly disregard such history. Also, when you've got at least a third of the current moderating staff (half, if you count badp's comments on your statistics) speaking out against you on your nomination post - and with undeniably legitimate cause to do so - it's generally time to gracefully bow out of the race instead of arguing with them. – Iszi 7 hours ago

An example to reinforce Iszi's position; Boltclock, a moderator on many other sites, was elected when he was very young, but even then, he had plenty of good backing from the community and was seen as mature, and was elected not of his age, but for his involvement with the community as a whole. – O-O 7 hours ago

Wow. Ardo has actually called me by my name in comments, before. Felt a bit creepy, but I didn't think nothing more of it. Thanks for bringing this up, I wouldnt feel comfortable voting in a mod that has a record of 'researching ussrs'. – Timelord64 6 hours ago

good luck with your nomination – Dragonrage 5 hours ago

This election is currently in the nomination phase. Nominations close in 6 days.

You must have more than 300 reputation to nominate yourself as a candidate in this election.
