Enemies often drop equipped weapons, shields and torches when they die, which often results in the player having to search a large area full of tall grass or the items falling through the floor and disappearing forever. Is there a way to disable this behavior and make the corpses hold onto the mementos of their life for my looting convenience?

You mean something like what the Unofficial Skyrim Patch modifies in Skyrim? "NPCs will no longer drop weapons or shields as separate objects, as these are never cleaned up which greatly adds to save bloating and litters the game world (the items will still appear to be dropped, but will access the corpse's inventory to be taken and be cleaned up with the corpse if left)." – galacticninja Mar 5 at 6:20
@galacticninja yeah, that would be great. – kotekzot Mar 5 at 14:15
wouldnt that make this a mod rec, and therefore off topic? – Ender Mar 5 at 17:39
@Ender no, for 2 reasons: mod-rec isn't off-topic and this isn't a mod-rec question. Mods may be one of many possible solutions, but that can be said about almost every problem with a PC game. – kotekzot Mar 5 at 17:55

@Ender As per these meta posts, there is now no blanket rule/policy that mod recommendations are off-topic: meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/5547/… and meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/6828/… – galacticninja Mar 13 at 2:04

quite sure when you kill an enemy and they drop their weapons and/or shield if you search the corpse you'll still see it in their inventory

otherwise, you can stop blowing up your victims with high powered magic or getting them in the head with a sneak attack and just rush in and slash them into ribbons, that way you have a chance to catch the weapon when they drop it

If the weapons/shield are equipped they will drop it upon dying and it won't show up in their inventory. If it's unequipped, they won't drop it and it will show up in their inventory upon dying. Also, see this question: Mod that makes dropped items stand out? – galacticninja Mar 13 at 2:11

This is not true. Are you thinking of Skyrim, perhaps? That was something they changed compared to Oblivion, to make Skyrim not have this annoying problem. – SevenSidedDie Mar 13 at 3:13
@SevenSidedDie might be Skyrim, i can't remember which one it was but i had these kick ass staffs and when i attacked a skeleton with it it would blow the thing up and scatter it's bones all over the place and just by selecting one of the limb you could see their inventory, i always carry a couple of magic staffs in case if i'm fighting a horde or an enemy i would die very quickly if i went up close with a sword – Memor-X Mar 13 at 3:34
Definitely not true, Oblivion enemies will rarely not release their held weapons on death, but in that case they will still be physically attached to their hands. – kotekzot Mar 13 at 9:26
