I have never played neverwinter, but I'm planning to start.

It seems that there are classes in the game (Wizzard Cleric, Two Handed Fighter, A Shielded Tanker and a Rogue).

For general raiding, will I always need a Tanker + Healer + Dps's in the party?

How does the raiding system work? (Guild Wars 2 managed to "solve" it by giving dodge and self healing abilities to every class)

There is dodging in Neverwinter, and healing using potions on a relatively short cooldown. The "Holy Trinity" is still strong but not entirely necessary. –  Sadly Not May 9 '13 at 18:48

One important thing to know is that healing causes massive aggro. You can spec such that the aggro is lessened but I find as a healer I'm always focused by mobs when I get overzealous with healing. That's why clerics are considered one of the hardest classes to play in groups. –  Sadly Not May 9 '13 at 19:08

I really hate this question, and it comes up for every MMO. Short answer that applies every time: If the trinity exists, you need it. If it doesn't (as in GW2), you don't. Sure, it might be possible to clear content without it, but that means one of three things: 1) You are overgeared for the content. 2) You are a player of above average skill, grouped with other players of above average skill. 3) The content is too easy to begin with, because a group with all the advantages of the trinity in the party will steamroll content designed not to need it. –  LessPop_MoreFizz May 9 '13 at 23:56

And in the last case, as in the first case, even if you 'don't need it', if it's there, and conveys an advantage, the community will decide for you that you need it. –  LessPop_MoreFizz May 9 '13 at 23:57

One of the main benefits of a cleric is that they can fully heal the party after each encounter. There are usually many encounters before you reach a campfire to fully heal. Unless you plan to chug a lot of potions each dungeon, it is recommended to include at least one cleric. It is also a good idea to have some DPS classes in your party, to speed up runs. I have found tanks not necessary (I have played up to lvl 35), as cleric heals tend to attract all the monster aggro.

I've read that yes, the Clerics tend to have the higher threat in the party, even with the tankers taunt skill, which is weird. I'm trying to decide between a cleric and a guardian fighter. Are clerics able to actually kill something in PvP and level with no problem ? –  Marcello Grechi Lins May 9 '13 at 21:48

I have noticed as a lvl 35 cleric, the only way I can level is with at least one other DPS. Soloing is very time consuming and not worth it due to low DPS. In PVP as a cleric, the majority of the time is spent healing, as there are not many options for DPS skills. –  sworded May 9 '13 at 21:59

Meh. Thats bad =/ –  Marcello Grechi Lins May 9 '13 at 22:12

Lame, clerics used to be murder machines in NWN and NWN 2. –  kotekzot May 26 '13 at 2:43

To answer this question the answer is no, you do not NEED the holy trinity for dungeons/skirmishes.

There's enough dodging mechanics that you can take almost no damage for entire fights, so you can do 5 DPS a dungeon if you like, but to be fair one of your DPS is going to be running around the whole time with agro constantly trying not to get hit, or drinking a lot of potions so a tank is helpful here.

A full group of healers (or tanks) are going to take forever to do a dungeon just because there damage is lower.

When you use the queue system, most of the time it tries to give you tank/heals/3 DPS. For this it takes about 45 mins to an hour to get into one as a DPS. As a tank it's fast and healer it can take some time but not as long as DPS.

All dungeons can be entered solo or with your own personal party without The queue system so you can do it with whatever type of group you want.

Healing

Most classes use potions for healing, Clerics have personal and group/target heals, tanks get 1 or 2 skills that give back health. Other DPS classes I don't think get any (I could be wrong), but you can get items with "Life Steal" on them which will give you health back with each hit, also you can get items with "Regeneration" that will give you health every 2 seconds or something like that.

Dungeons

  • normally takes about 45 mins - 1 hour.
  • lots of mobs laying around
  • resources and other hidden areas can be found to get treasure
  • 2-3 minibosses
  • 1 main boss

Skirmishs

Take about 15-20 mins per, (normally) you are taking into an instance with 1 area, 1 main boss 1 sub boss and some mobs.
