On FTL, some weapons have a breach chance. What does breach do? How important is it?

the best part about hull breaches is this little tidbit: Because of the hull breaches, hull lasers can be particularly useful in fights with AIs especially long fights. The AI's can't repair hull breaches and any system with a hull breach is permanently damaged. –  z ' Jun 12 '13 at 12:44

Interesting. I just have to try this on the 3rd boss fight after killing all the crew. –  Hennes Jun 12 '13 at 12:46

@Spart Really? I'm pretty sure that I've seen the computer fix hull breaches. I'm also skeptical of that quote because a hull breach doesn't actually damage the system at all, it just leaks oxygen. –  bwarner Jun 12 '13 at 13:22

@Bwarner i can confirm the AI doesn't fix hull breaches nor repair systems that have hull breaches on them: i.imgur.com/X1d32go.jpg (note no repair progress on any of the damaged systems by the AI) The quote might be slightly misleading. Hull breaches themselves don't damage subsystems, like you said, but if you damage a subsystem and cause a breach in the process, it won't be repaired by an AI. –  z ' Jun 12 '13 at 13:47

Ah, I see. AI specifically refers to unmanned ships. Got it. –  bwarner Jun 12 '13 at 13:52

In FTL a Breach is a hole in the hull represented by a crack in the floor - you can see a hull breach in the room below the Engine room in the below screenshot

Breaches slowly vent oxygen into space and also must be repaired before the system contained in that room can be repaired and so they can be particularly nasty when trying to repair vital systems in a room.

The breach chance of a weapon is the chance that the wepon will cause a hull breach in that room when it hits (I'm not sure what probability "low" corresponds to)

needs more freehand red circles to aide me in finding the breach –  RhysW Jun 12 '13 at 13:05

Here's a ship with 9 breaches, also possible spoilers: media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mbpl4nN5Iu1r015me.jpg –  aslum Jun 12 '13 at 13:40

That's a Hull Breach? I thought it was something that died (like a mantis corpse). I've since discovered that the crew will repair it, and that it leaks O2, but I didn't make the connection. Thanks for clearing that up. –  ChargingPun Dec 11 '13 at 19:31

Breaching creates a breach in the hull. Breaches will slowly remove oxygen from any room exposed to the breach (without an airlock between it and the breach).

There's no single wiki article that seems to cover breaching very well, but there's a few articles with useful information if you just search for "breach". –  Dave McClelland Jun 12 '13 at 12:30
