This question already has an answer here:

In the new "Adventure mode" I just found a cursed chest where I thought 100 monsters would spawn. However there were no monsters spawning but The Skeleton King. How exactly does this work? Can bosses spawn randomly or only by triggering certain events? Also are there only bosses from the current act/region you're in or could let's say Diablo spawn when you're doing a bounty in act I?

Another thing that would really interest me is how these event-bosses differ from their original ones. Do they have an increased (legendary-)drop-chance? Are they just the normal boss but weaker or stronger? I'm kind of confused right now. Also how would a boss like The Butcher work if he spawns on random terrain? (He usually has this burning AOE in the real boss fight)

Oooo I haven't encountered this but it sounds super fun and confusing. I'm loving the new Adventure Mode and am curious for the answer to this! – spugsley Mar 26 '14 at 22:54
I've heard of the Skeleton King appearing, and I've personally seen Ghom, Lord of Gluttony from act 3 spawn from a cursed shrine. From my experience, they appear to have the same amount of health and same abilities as they would from the actual fight. – Doc Mar 28 '14 at 17:40

it seems there are now 2 type of cursed chests, the normal one where 100 mobs spawn and a cursed chest where you need to kill an elite pack/ champion/ boss within the given time. the last one gives you 1 chest when you finish it but doesnt give anything if you fail the event.

There are also Cursed Shrines that have similar effects. Check out this question about how cursed chests work for more info about the different types. Most everything there can apply to a cursed shrine. – Doc Mar 28 '14 at 17:36
