Arqade is a question and answer site for passionate videogamers on all platforms. It's 100% free, no registration required.

Since I own all the current-generation consoles as well as a gaming PC, whenever I decide to buy a new game, I tend to end up having to do a decent amount of searching to see if there are any significant differences between the different versions of the game.

For example, some games run better on the 360 than the PS3 for some reason. Others may be able to run at a higher resolution on PC than any of the consoles. Some games even have slightly different content on the different platforms.

Is there any site that tries to comprehensively list and compare cross-platform games, perhaps recommending a particular platform for each game? It seems like this would be a fairly common need for people that own multiple systems, but I've yet to discover a site that does this.

I don't know of any specific sites. That said, these are valid questions for this site (see this as an example), and I've personally found that GameFAQs has good coverage on the mechanics and content end, either in its forums or its FAQs. Neither of these are devoted to it, though, so that's why I'm not posting this as an answer. –  Grace Note Feb 15 '11 at 20:25
@Grace: Yeah, that's the problem, is that the "answer" tends to be in a different place every time. Sometimes GameFAQs, sometimes Wikipedia will have some info, Eurogamer does some cross-platform screenshot comparisons for some games, often it's just some completely random forum where I find some info. Never mind the semi-frequent occurrence of running into completely wrong info, or just console fanboys posting that the version for their favorite console is better, without any actual reason. Would be really nice to have a definitive source. –  Chad Birch Feb 15 '11 at 20:42
Being a console gamer by nature and having to deal with this often, I hear you. I hope that you are able to turn up a good source from this question. –  Grace Note Feb 15 '11 at 20:43

Well, it looks like the answer was "no, there's no site for that". So I decided to try to fill that gap, and set one up: GameDifferences.

I also expanded the scope a little beyond my question, from just multi-platform games to also include info about remakes and alternate versions. Basically I'd just like the site to be able to answer "What's the difference between the versions?"

I've only got info filled in for a few games so far, and it takes a while to research each game, so if anyone could submit some info (through email links, on the site), I'd greatly appreciate it.

They don't cover all games, but they cover some major ones, and with admirable detail. They helped me pick the right versions for Vanquish, Crysis 2 and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

I prefer giantbomb, they have a review section for all the platforms and the video/audio reviews will usually explain the differences in those game versions.
