Minecraft is pretty fun as a sandbox game, but are there any games I can play within the game so I can compete while not-really-competing with others?

I remember seeing something in a Notch interview video about people trying to knock the blocks out from the others and don't know if there are any other common meta-games like that.

This is just a very specific and awkward game-rec question... – StrixVaria Mar 29 '11 at 20:24

Yo dawg, I herd you like being indecisive, so we put a metagame in your objectiveless game, so you can not-really-compete while you not-really-compete? – harbichidian Mar 29 '11 at 20:34
At out server we made a giant waterslide. 4 people start in separate lanes then boat down into a jump that merges all lanes, then we race until the finish. Honestly, there's a game in everything if you're creative enough. – Sadly Not Mar 30 '11 at 22:19

Spleef is the game where you knock blocks out from under other players. It's been around since Creative Mode.

There are mods that can transform the game into more traditional competative games, i.e. capture the flag.

Since MC is a sandbox game, you're free to make your own competative game within the minecraft world. My server likes making complicated, booby-trapped mazes for each other to try out, and I've contested with another MineCrafter in a "who can make the best scavenger hunt" competition.
