Arqade is a question and answer site for passionate videogamers on all platforms. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This is not about taking a rented game slot from COD hosting providers like http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/ I need to take a hosting space and then install the game there. (You may check Ideas or solutions to resolve the issue of absence of Local-Dedicated-Public multiplayer gaming servers for details on why I need to do this).

I have absolutely zero knowledge about this. Following are the hardware specs for playing the game on multiplayer -

System Requirements

Minimum: 3D hardware accelerator card required
- 100% DirectX 9.0b compatible 32MB hardware T&L-capable video card and latest drivers*,
- Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/XP,
- Pentium III 600MHz or Athlon 600MHz processor or higher for systems with Windows 98/ME, Pentium III 700MHz or Athlon 700MHz processor or higher for systems with Windows 2000/XP, 128MB RAM,
- 1.4GB of uncompressed free hard disk space (plus 400MB for Windows 98/ME swap file, 600MB for Windows 2000/XP swap file), 100% DirectX 9.0b compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers
- latest drivers, DirectX 9.0b (included)

  Multi-player Requirements:
o Internet (TCP/IP) and LAN (TCP/IP) play supported
o Internet play requires 56kbps (or faster) modem and latest drivers
o LAN play requires network interface card and latest drivers

Important Notice: *Some 3D accelerator cards with the chipset listed here may not be compatible with the 3D acceleration features utilized by Call of Duty. Please refer to your hardware manufacturer for 100% DirectX 9.0b compatibility.

  Supported Chipsets
      o All ATI Radeon cards
      o All nVidia GeForce cards
      o Matrox Parhelia

What hardware specifications are recommended for the server hosting the game as a dedicated server? Is there some general rule of thumb? I guess number of players playing is also a factor to be counted.

Update
The hosting company is asking me about the bandwidth requirement. What other parameters related to hosting are to be taken care of? What are the recommended specifications for them?

Are you registered over at gamedev or serverfault or anywhere more technical? – Garet Claborn Apr 25 '11 at 21:09
@Garet Claborn - yes I am registered in both. – Sandeepan Nath Apr 26 '11 at 4:59

Judging by my bandwidth and how the lag is on 16 person games I would suggest 5mbps down and 1 mbps up at a minimum. ideally 10 down 5 up is what you want but it might be out of your price range. Also keep in mind that speed isn't everything, location is KEY here if you have a server thats in California and you live on the east coast or worse out of the US you are going to have high latency. – Kyle Apr 26 '11 at 11:57

about 1-2GB RAM and 10GB worth of free space should be enough, for best performance. However, the internet speed must be fast, and the ping must be low, otherwise the experience will be affected, especially when many players join and lag the connection.

@bckbck - thanks for your answer. Please let me know what about bandwidth requirement? Please check my update. – Sandeepan Nath Apr 26 '11 at 10:57
how many people are you expecting to join the server? – user8949 Apr 26 '11 at 13:34
Not more than 10-15 people to begin with. I see there is a slot concept while purchasing server space from gametracker.com – Sandeepan Nath Apr 26 '11 at 13:42
is the server located near to you? if the server location is too far the ping between the server and the player may be too high – user8949 Apr 26 '11 at 13:50
yes the server is in the same city. I did some ping tests to the sample IPs from many computers (with different networks) and pings ranged from 65 ms to 150 ms. – Sandeepan Nath Apr 26 '11 at 14:08
