Some common swords do more damage than the silver sword. I'm level 7 now and don't see why that silver sword is special? Why do I need two swords, when I could just use one of them all the time?

Remember to craft upgraded silver swords as you acquire the recipes. They tend to do significantly more damage than the base one. – StrixVaria May 25 '11 at 18:30
The base silver sword diagram gets stuck in your inventory all game though. :( I"LL NEVER GET THOSE .1 units of carrying capacity back! – Raven Dreamer♦ May 25 '11 at 18:48

Monsters are more vulnerable to silver swords, while humanoids (humans, elves and dwarves) are more vulnerable to steel swords. If you use the wrong sword type you will make far less damage. Always use the silver sword against monsters and the steel sword against humanoids.

Same reason as why you had to use it in the first instalment of the game: it makes monster fights easier. You can play it the hard way and try hacking away at everything with your long sword but not everybody wants to subject themselves to such masochistic enjoyments.

Silver swords are usually for hunting monsters. Steel swords are for hunting people.
