I'm level 19 or so and my Dog is still named "Dog" and not "Dogmeat" like I'm seeing around the internet.

Through a little research I've heard things like "Just keep doing stuff for the minutemen" or "Mama Murphy will tell you the name of your dog."

I think I've done everything for the minutemen. I have the castle and now I seem to be granted endless quests of helping random groups around the commonwealth.

Mama Murphy also doesn't seem to care about my dog at all. I've told my dog to investigate her, but nothing. I've given her Jet and built her chair. Now she's asking for Mentats. If I keep doing stuff for her will she eventually name my dog?

Or do I need to do something else entirely?

((SPOILER)) I think when I first met her in the Museum she says something about Dogmeat and I am pretty sure he was named after that. You have done far more than me aside from the mentat. I haven't done anything past that, so I suppose it could be the mentat. But I really think it was just when I first walked in there. – JClaspill Nov 13 '15 at 17:25
I didn't have Dogmeat when I went in there. I don't remember exactly when I picked him up but apparently I was a little late in doing so. – Corey Ogburn Nov 13 '15 at 17:35
You might want to go back to the room in the Museum with him and see what happens. Be kinda funny if just taking him into that room unlocks it. – JClaspill Nov 13 '15 at 17:41
When I first met Mama Murphy at the museum, she mentioned Dogmeat, and that's when I chose to ask "Dogmeat?" You may have missed that opportunity. – Nolonar Nov 13 '15 at 18:41
I didn't even pick the "Dogmeat?" conversation option and my dog got renamed; it's likely that the script is set up so that the dog is renamed when she speaks that line. – Unknown Zombie Nov 13 '15 at 19:08

During the quest "getting a clue," if you have Dogmeat with you you can refer to him for the purposes of being a bloodhound.

This will fix it.

Yep, it is this. Before my dog was still named Dog, but afterwards it was changed to Dogmeat – Lyrion Nov 16 '15 at 9:49
I hope this works. I've avoided the main quest and now I'm level 22 with a "Dog" and Mama Murphy has been drugged to death so she's no help to me now. I'll pick up the main quest and report back. – Corey Ogburn Nov 16 '15 at 15:30
On my second playthrough, I skirted around Concord and never even met Mama Murphy. After taking the step above, my dog is dogmeat. – DCShannon Nov 18 '15 at 23:24
It's not the only way, because I haven't done "getting a clue" and my dog is called Dogmeat. I don't know when he changed name, it didn't seem to be a result of any conversation I remember, I just noticed it had changed and thought "oh, when did his name change?!" – boomstick Nov 20 '15 at 1:27
This did work for me. I'm more relieved than I probably should be that my dog finally has a proper name. – Corey Ogburn Dec 1 '15 at 15:47
