How do I sprint in Minecraft?

I've seen a couple of videos of people sprinting in Minecraft (1.8). How do you do so?

Double tap and hold your W key.

Do you use a mod to do that? Because that's not the default behaviour. – MBraedley Mar 16 at 2:41

I believe it is If you double tap W, You will sprint... but in Newer versions the default is SHIFT.
