Can you go into a little more detail? What have you tried? Any errors? – user3389 Sep 30 '11 at 20:56
When I type in the IP, the screen just says: Can't Resolve Hostname – TheEpicUnknown Sep 30 '11 at 20:59
Wait, I pressed enter - It also isn't working for my friends. None of anybody's servers will work in 1.8. – TheEpicUnknown Sep 30 '11 at 21:00
Are you sure the server is on? Is the server running the same version that you're trying to connect from? – Raven Dreamer Sep 30 '11 at 21:37
Um, I played 1.8 SMP last night. Is this more recent than that? – John the Green Sep 30 '11 at 22:14

It's difficult to tell what is being asked here. This question is ambiguous, vague, incomplete, overly broad, or rhetorical and cannot be reasonably answered in its current form. For help clarifying this question so that it can be reopened, see the FAQ.

A quick fix that may work for you: in your server.properties file, set the online mode to false. Let me know if that works for you.

If this works, that would indicate a problem at Minecraft.net... – John the Green Sep 30 '11 at 22:13

Can't Resolve Hostname means it can not find the ip address of the server based off of the name you gave it.

Either you misspelled the server, or it is off, or there is a issue with your computer connecting with the internet.

There is nothing wrong with minecraft, it is either the server or what you are typing in to the game.

The server being off will cause Connection timed out: connect or Connection refused: connect, not a hostname error. – Ben Blank Sep 30 '11 at 22:31
If you are playing on a lan and use the NetBIOS name of a computer that – Scott Chamberlain Oct 1 '11 at 17:15
