Every time I log in to Minecraft, after recently downloading it onto my desktop, I notice that a couple of seconds in, if not straight away, the program freezes and closes. The following message appears:

EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x000084c1, pid=1508, tid=1220

The crash happened outside the Java Virtual Machine in native code.

It then displays information on threads, etc. How do I fix this?

Do you have the latest version of Java? Is this a pre-release version of Minecraft? – fredley Oct 22 '11 at 10:51
Reporting which Operating system you use would have been helpful, anyway, there's a bug report filed with tons of comments. – Bobby Oct 22 '11 at 16:27

Access violation sounds like your computer is denying it from running. Would running the game as an administrator solve the issue?
