I'm probably one of the few people who never got to play Modern Warfare 2, but I did play Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Now I bought MW3, but I'm worried I might be a little lost on the story. So I'd just like to know the basics of the MW2 plot before diving into MW3, no extensive answer necessary.

Assuming I remember the ending of MW1 (and my memory doesn't fail me), what big events moved the plot in MW2? I just want to catch up on the story I missed, please don't say anything about the story of MW3.

In order words: spoil MW2 (but not 3) for me.

What you are asking is a bit unclear. Is it the plot of MW2 you are wondering about, or is it that of MW3? –  DrFish Nov 7 '11 at 21:41

@Bora I am asking about the plot in MW2. I thought I was clear by saying what big events moved the plot in MW2?, and asking specifically for MW2 spoilers. Edited to improve clarity. Suggestions welcome. –  Malabarba Nov 7 '11 at 21:50

Gosh darn you @NickT, you beat me to the joke :P –  Wipqozn Nov 7 '11 at 22:40

Well, the SP campaign of MW2 was pretty intense, though linear for some. I like linear. –  DrFish Nov 7 '11 at 22:47

Major Nelson posted a video on Twitter last week, that gives a high level overview of the plot of previous two Modern Warfare games. That should get you up to speed on the events prior to Modern Warfare 3.

+1 - Plot of MW2 AND MW1. Great! –  SilverM-A Nov 7 '11 at 22:42

This is really helpful. Most of the time when you play these campaign based games the plot takes a backseat to the action. It also seems like the stories are a bit scattered. It's great to see something that captures the stories. –  milesmeow Jan 4 '12 at 1:09

The Call of Duty wikia has a pretty good synopsis of the campaign
