/ˈskaɪɹɪm/ ... unless you're on skooma. – Martin Sojka Nov 8 '11 at 9:59

Martin's got it. +1 to his comment for using IPA. Using English spelling to indicate pronunciation is probably the worst as English has almost no pronunciation rules compared to let's say French or Spanish. – deutschZuid Nov 9 '11 at 1:29

Why all the -1's? – Joe the Person Nov 20 '11 at 0:42

@James IPA's great, but let's be honest here: both "sky" and "rim" are English words with only one pronunciation. Plus, around 90% of English words CAN be pronounced as written. Also, let's not forget all the vowel and /r/ variants across English dialects: a Scot may very well say /ˈskəiɾɪm/ and a Southerner say /ˈskaːɹɪm/ (and many would pronounce "Skyrem" the same way). Within the game's American, British and Swedish Chef accents, there are several different pronunciations, but they all equal how that person would say "SKY-rim". – Bryan Nov 20 '11 at 4:18

@GnomeSlice I think it's as simple as "Proper Noun" vs. "Genericized Terminology", or conversely, "Pronounce Name" vs. "Define Term". Bottom line, this question is setting the bar for questions rather low. Perhaps too low. Does this question show research effort? – Raven Dreamer May 28 at 3:53

I would assume since it's in the official gameplay trailer (at about 30 seconds in), that it's pronounced as:

SKY-rim

At least, that's how I hear it. There's also developers pronouncing it as SKY-rim in the making of video.

@NickT The badge-to-effort ratio on this answer is definitely high. :) – Doozer Blake Nov 22 '11 at 16:29

It's sky-rim. To be exact it's skyrim[skaɪɹɪm] (for obvious reasons). The dash is there because you put it in the question; it has nothing to do with pronunciation.

Scrim is a common mistake when you read the name fast and without much attention. SKEE-rim is probably the one you see on drugs.

From official trailers it is also pronounced skyriM or skyriN(depends on what they refer to) plus it puts more effort on pronouncing the last letter than the SKY.

I just watched a commercial for it and they called it "SKY RIM" (equal emphasis on both syllables). Sky, just like the word "sky" is typically pronounced, and rim, just like the word "rim" is typically pronounced.

You can also hear many other characters in the game itself pronounce the word when talking about their province. And yes, it's [skaɪɹɪm].

SKY-rim as in the sky and a car's rim.
