What are the most useful multiplayer unlocks in Battlefield3?

P.S. I do know where I can find the list of all unlocks, but I wonder what are the most useful. for example there is a lot of weapon type and they all look alike.

Hi @IAdapter, the "most useful" unlocks is fairly subjective. Different play styles lend themselves to different unlocks so there's no definitive answer. Can you think of a specific case and rephrase the question? – authenticgeek Nov 18 '11 at 22:11
@Nick I think I play all styles, maybe I should split it into 10 questions? – IAdapter Nov 18 '11 at 23:34

It is probably automatic based on the weapon/kit/vehicle you use. But that said, for most vehicles the IR flare/smoke is a great unlock because it helps you avoid enemy attacks. For tanks, I really like the thermal image site as it makes spotting enemy infantry much easier.

For Recon, getting a sniper rifle that does more initial damage is very valuable because you often only get 1 hit on an enemy and getting only head shots is hard. I also find the spawn beacon effective for helping a squad return to a forward location.

For Assault, I like the M320 grenade launcher add-on, but I know many who prefer the default medkit.

For Engineer, I the Stinger (anti-air) upgrade is useful on some aircraft-heavy maps (but not all.)

For Support, I like the upgraded M249 gun over the starting weapon.

IMHO the most useful upgrades are the ones that really need balancing:

  • Nuclear Death Ray, aka the Tactical Light - Although powered by a small battery, it has the power to blind multiple enemies at 200 yds. To a lesser extent, it is the same with a laser module.
  • Infra-red sights (IRNV) - Equivalent to a texture hack, and once acquired, renders all other sights obsolete. DICE have already said it will be nerfed in an upcoming patch, but I think they should withdraw it completely - or more likely, provide IRNV binoculars instead.
  • F2000 - a very accurate and powerful weapon. You can be beaten to the draw but still win if you have an F2000. IRL the F2000 is reasonable accurate and has a high rate of fire, but it's not the 'sniping' weapon it appears to be in game. On the other hand, higher level unlocks will always appear more useful simply because the people using them tend to be better (or at least more experienced in the game).

However, since you can't choose unlocks, I wouldn't worry. Get a few kills under your belt with existing weapons/attachments, then give new ones a try. You'll gradually find what you like and what suits your style of play. For example, as overpowered the Tactical Flashlight is, you might not choose to use it if you prefer a stealthy approach to the game - it's hard to stay hidden in the shadows with that powerful beam lighting the streets up!
