How many health potions should I buy when I return to base?

Let's say you return to base and have 300 gold left over. You obviously not going to buy 8 potions. How do you determine how many to return with?

It's a little hard to determine what you're asking here... can you try clarifying a bit? –  GnomeSlice Mar 25 '12 at 23:33

Actually, this is still a terribly subjective question, and isn't really a good fit for the site. –  GnomeSlice Mar 25 '12 at 23:49

Hi @Blizzgrarg, I'm voting to close your question because it's not a constructive question for the site. The number of pots you should buy is incredibly subjective based on your laning situation, whether it's early/mid/late game, what other items you want to buy, whether you have gp5 items or not, and more. There's no one, single definitive answer you could choose for this situation, as it's all very subjective based on the state of your particular match. Discussion-type questions do not fit well in our Q&A format here. –  FAE Mar 26 '12 at 0:52

Depends on how much harass you expect to be taken, how much sustain you already have, and what phase of the game it is.

A good alternate to buying health potions if you have 300 gold leftover is to buy the red potion consumable (currently red mushroom). This gives you bonus health and AD for a few minutes, which in some ways is better than health pot since it's immediate and unaffected by ignite or other healing debuffs.

It depends how your lane is doing if you are being harassed a lot than by all means get 3 or so potions. If you run out of mana a lot by all means get 2 mana pots. Judge how your lane is doing and determine how many you should buy. Also try to predict how the enemy damage will change when their ults come b/c you usually only worry potions at early lvls.
