I can't seem to find how to set a mouse button click to a regular attack. How is that done?

If you have "elective mode" on, you can just drag (with the left mouse button) the skill from the bar and drop it somewhere meaningless (e.g. on the main game area). If you don't have a skill in the "Left click" or "Right click" slot, then the melee will appear there instead. There are no options that I know of to put the melee on a number.

To activate "elective mode", you have to go into Options, then go to Gameplay, and then select "Elective Mode."

So, there you have it! :)

It wasn't like that early on in the D3 beta...it's a shame to see how much they messed with the battle system so that you can't even use a non-skill attack. – Kotsu Apr 21 '12 at 0:21

@RavenDreamer if you're a DH who wants to use a melee weapon (if only to test it out), there's a very good reason to remove a skill from the left mouse button :) which is what made me ask this question – Oak♦ Apr 24 '12 at 5:14
@Oak Each class has at least one melee-friendly skill with significant cooldowns that you can put on your left mouse button (e.g., fan of knives). Using one of those will trigger your default attack during the lengthy cooldown periods. – jzn May 2 '12 at 6:11
@Raven Dreamer I believe you worded that incorrectly. Either there's no reason to use a non-skill attack or those not reason to not use a skill attack. – Koviko May 27 '12 at 3:33
