Okay, at the end of D3 after killing Diablo, we are given a cut scene of Tyrael deciding to re-take his place in Heaven's council "as a mortal"

So where does this leave Tyrael and his powers? As a mortal, does he still get to retain the powers he had as the "Angel of Justice?" If he regains his powers, could he possibly undo the injustice against Leah and grant her life again? Or is he now the "Angel of Wisdom" as he proclaims that "Justice has been done this day" and no longer the "Angel of Justice"

I am just very confused and looking for someone more versed than I in Diablo lore to shed some light on some of this.

Are in fact the angels killed or just severely incapacitated? – Chris May 25 '12 at 20:42

Neither Imperius nor the other angels(except for Izual, presumably) are dead. They were only weakened by Diablo. – Mana May 25 '12 at 20:44

This question is essentially 100% speculative. It's just not answerable. – LessPop_MoreFizz May 25 '12 at 20:45
I think I have misunderstood the ending, I'll need to go home and watch it again. – Tater596 May 25 '12 at 20:51
I agree with @LessPop_MoreFizz, though I couldn't resist suggesting an undead Leah possibility – Alok May 25 '12 at 20:52

I'm pretty confident that the angels are not dead; for a few reasons:

  • They're still moving (slightly) in the scene you cite; they seem incapacitated, not killed.

  • Tyreal would have reacted much stronger if they had died.

  • We learn from Tyreal's chatter that angels (and demons) are extremely hard to actually kill. Their physical forms are flimsy, and should they be destroyed (as Tyreal was during the Worldstone explosion), they can eventually reconstitute their corporeal form.

So, as to Tyreal's powers:

  • He appears to retain much of his angelic power (judging from what he does throughout the game - his fall, the things he does w/ his sword, etc); he's just mortal.

  • There is a possibility that Tyreal has a finite life span now, though.

  • Being the aspect of wisdom seems like it will reduce his social power to the council, assuming stereotypes hold.

Imperius wasn't killed, only severely weakened by Diablo corrupting the Crystal Arch. Thanks to the cheesy plot, apparently ripping off wings means that ex-angels aren't affected where they should have been.

Tyrael is depicted as a powerful angel but has never been shown to have the ability to resurrect people; even if he got back his old powers & the portfolio of Justice he shouldn't be able to revive Leah. Now if he went out of control again though - we might get to see undead Leah like with all the 'unjustly killed' undead in Act 1.

Weird to see Tyrael as Wisdom, I can see him grabbing Valor as he's quite brave but haven't noticed much wise decisions from him :p

None of the Angiris Council dies.

Before you enter the portal to the Arch, Tyrael remarks that they are incapacitated and not actually dead if you can stop Diablo's corruption of the Arch.

Imperius is not slain, as he is in that room before, severely injured from his battle with Diablo at the beginning of Act IV.

At the end of Act IV, the Angiris Council sans Imperius are there to congratulate you.

Tyrael likely has no real power left except for that remaining in his sword, and it is unlikely Leah will ever be resurrected.
