Arqade is a question and answer site for passionate videogamers on all platforms. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I'm tired of downloading games (demos and purchased ones) just to realize that the multiplayer mode sucks because it has few players or it just get stuck.

One case is Kane & Linch 2 demo and another one is Dogfighter demo. Both fail to deliver a good multiplayer experience, and I presume the full versions also suck.

I think that if I could have access to a list of games ordered by number of online players, I would only download/purchase the ones that work really well in the multiplayer mode.

There is such a list of "most played online games this month" website? Is it often updated?

The best list I've ever found comes from XFire (sort by rank).

Here's the current top 10 as of 9/7/2010

                                   | Total hours
         Game | per day
-------------------------------------------------
1. World of Warcraft | 225544
2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare | 142450
3. League of Legends | 76813
4. Call of Duty 2 | 70182
5. Starcraft II | 56591
6. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 | 44590
7. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 | 32183
8. Counter-Strike: Source | 16130
9. Aion | 16086
10. Cross Fire | 14269

You can also break it down by genre.

Careful, this is for people running XFire, not the population as a whole. While this should be useful for finding a game with people (which is what OP wants) it is not accurate for what games are played the most. – tzenes Sep 7 '10 at 22:11
Agreeing with tzenes, especially as this article reveals that MW2 was by far the most played by Raptr players in the month of August, which contradicts the Xfire list. The only thing you can reliably draw from these sources is that X population that uses Y program plays Z game the most. Also Xfire only tracks PC games, whereas Raptr can track console play. – FAE Sep 7 '10 at 22:42
@FallenAngelEyes: I highly highly doubt MW2 has more players than WoW. – BlueRaja - Danny Pflughoeft Sep 8 '10 at 1:01

It does have more players using Raptr. – user56 Sep 8 '10 at 4:08

Major Nelson for the xbox posts LIVE Activity on a weekly basis under the tag "TOP LIVE." While this only gives data for the xbox and doesn't post numbers, it gives you an idea of who is playing what. He breaks it down by Xbox Live, Arcade, Indie, and Windows Live. The rankings are determined by the number of unique users (UU's).

LIVE Activity for week of Aug 9

It looks like he wants something more PC centric, but good points none the less. – tzenes Sep 7 '10 at 21:27
great answer! some live titles also have a pc version – Jader Dias Sep 7 '10 at 21:42
I had forgotten, he puts "Games for Windows Top LIVE Titles" on there too! – tzenes Sep 7 '10 at 21:49
