When you craft the Staff of herding, there is no clue how to use it. Was it revealed through datamining or by the developpers?

I think you vastly underestimate the obsessive experimentation of the player base. – LessPop_MoreFizz May 30 '12 at 11:53

It would be pretty unusual to not figure it out on your first play through Act I after you got the staff. The place where you use it is right along the path to the first quest outside of New Tristram. When the big ghost of a cow rises up out of a corpse, you tend to pay attention.

The ghost will not rise up, unless you come with the staff already. – Ilya Melamed May 30 '12 at 12:20
@IlyaMelamed Yes, but think about how many times you redo an act/area. You are bound to stumble across it eventually. – Emerica. May 30 '12 at 12:31
@IlyaMelamed I suppose I assumed that after spending the time and gold to craft the staff you wouldn't just tuck it away in your stash. Even if some people wouldn't carry the staff with them, it's certainly not unreasonable to imagine someone, if not many people doing it and finding the Whimsyshire entrance quite easily. – dpatchery May 30 '12 at 12:32
