I picked the lock to the investigator's chest in the arconoeum and took the rings, however I lost them earlier in the game.

Is there any way to get the rings back?

You... shouldn't be able to lose the rings. They're quest items and can't be dropped. – LessPop_MoreFizz Aug 19 '12 at 15:57
