Why won't Splinter Cell: Double Agent save my game properly?

I am have been playing splinter cell double agent. I got past the escaping prison mission and saved Jamie. I am got to the next mission and saved it. When I went back on I had to do the prison thing all over again. Does anyone know why this is happening? I have checked the save profiles but they don't show any record of the save file.

I have figured out that if you click continue on the main menu it will load your game on the last completed mission. If you click load game and then progress you can load the last save and then continue from where you left off. I found out this info yesterday 27/06/2012 from my dad.
