I was playing on the newest snapshot this morning (12w27a), and I noticed after I had broken some blocks above me into the underside of a lake bed, that the water flowing in gave me hit damage. I validated that I was not drowning because I never went below about 3/4 air bubbles. After a little testing, I could reproduce it consistently by placing a bucket of water in front of me and letting the flowing water push me against the wall. I would receive rapid 1/2-heart hit damage as long as I was against the wall.

Has anyone else ever seen this before? Is this a new feature/bug in MineCraft? I searched the talk pages on all relevant subjects and the change logs for all previous versions and cannot find this behavior documented anywhere.

Reminds me of that update in Dwarf Fortress where everything "falling" or "dropping" would hit/hurt the Dwarf...Dwarfs which cancel their jobs for whatever reason drop what they carry, go figure. – Bobby Jul 5 '12 at 21:17

Whether feature or bug, you seem to have confirmed it's happening, so I'm not exactly sure what you're meaning to ask. You should approach the developers of you want to confirm exactly what it is. Developer snapshots are pretty volatile, though; it's quite probable that either the behavior will change or this will become a known feature, so I've voted to close as Too Localized. Check out our FAQ and definitely feel free to ask any other questions you have that might be a better fit -- though of course, this question might stay open if others disagree with my assessment :) – Matthew Read Jul 5 '12 at 21:27
@MatthewRead: I guess I'm asking if someone else can reproduce the behavior. I've never found a bug before, and it seems like such a core mechanic that I'm surprised to be the first one finding it, and that it's not documented in the release. – mellamokb Jul 5 '12 at 21:49
It happened to me once, but I couldn't reproduce it. However, it does happen on Let's Plays I've watched, so... IDK? – ccreason Aug 15 '12 at 20:04
@ccreason: It has been better documented in more recent bugs. It appears to be a NW/SE type of bug, meaning that it depends on the direction of the flowing water whether it causes damage or not. And I believe it may already be fixed in the newest release (1.3.1/2) – mellamokb Aug 15 '12 at 20:16
