I just recently got into Terraria (thanks Steam Summer Sale!) and it has been generally pretty entertaining. I am now trying to create a Nightmare Pickaxe but I first need to get enough Shadow Scales to do so. Where can they be found, and what is the easiest way for me to obtain them?

Create Worm Food and activate it in the corruption. Build a nice platform to stand on and kill Eater of Worlds (which spawns when you activate Worm Food). You'll get LOTS of shadow scales.

Looks like I need to increase my gear then. I can't even defeat that eyeball yet... –  Emerica. Jul 20 '12 at 17:08
Yeah. It'll take you time. Alternately, find a friend, create a server, and conquer the bosses together. Remember, in Terraria, your character is the same across worlds and servers. Makes it easy for unscrupulous people to cheat, but also good for things like boss fights. Some of the first boss fights I had was on a friend's private server. Just a thought. –  elegantonyx Jul 20 '12 at 17:09
@Emerica. I actually find the worm easier than the eye ball just because its position is easier to predict. Make sure you build like a 3 level platform that is a bit wide Before you summon the worm though :D –  James Jul 20 '12 at 22:47
@James Interesting. When the Guild Wars beta is over I will be off to try to kill this worm! –  Emerica. Jul 22 '12 at 18:20
@Emerica. I know this is old, but the harpoon works great against the Eater of worlds, Use a grappling hook and cling to the top of a chasm and aim down. For that you need a lot of healing potions and ok armor(Gold is fine). –  Baked Potato Aug 6 '12 at 19:06

kill the eater of worlds a few times. To kill the eyeball silver armor and a gold sword should do it.

This does not add anything new to the accepted answer already listed. Perhaps this should be a comment? –  Timelord64 Aug 31 at 11:15

Actually, there is another way to get Shadow Scales. Fight a bunch of Eaters of Souls (you will obviously get some armor in the process) approximately 10000, and I don't know about you, but I got a Shadow Scale. Just saying. I play on mobile.

That would be the exact opposite of easy and efficient. –  Radhil Aug 20 at 2:17
The wiki does not list Shadow Scales as a drop from Eater of Souls, even for mobile. The item page indicates they only drop from the Eater of Worlds. –  John Cleaver Aug 20 at 14:06

One easy way is if you have the Demolitionist NPC, you can purchase bombs and blow up Ebonstone to get to Shadow Orbs. Not only can you get a musket (which allows access to the Arms Dealer), sometimes a meteor will land. The Eater of worlds will also spawn so if you don't have worm food you can just break shadow orbs with a hammer. Every 3rd Shadow Orb that you break will spawn the Eater of Worlds.

@JohnCleaver Then edit it! We are a community after all, and Arqade is a production of the community's efforts to improve the site. –  oaml yya Feb 16 at 17:23
I would only do that if I were 100% sure that I could do so without changing the meaning of the post. That was not the case here. –  John Cleaver Feb 16 at 20:10

You don't always get rotten chunks or vile powder from killing corrupt enemies so the best way to farm the eater of worlds' shadow scales is to destroy a heck load of shadow orbs. You have to destroy three orbs to summon him once.

The Eater of Worlds is the only way to obtain Shadow Scales, but don't worry; it's arguably the easiest boss in the game because each section of its body gives you a heart upon being destroyed.
