I bought the 2 antenna black MAX wireless adapter for my 120 GB Xbox 360, but cannot connect to my home network. This is a third party product but is officially sanctioned by Microsoft. Apparently when the light on the adapter flashes green it means that the device is still trying to find a signal, and that's the problem.

Microsoft only said what the flashing green light means, but they failed to give a solution to the problem. I spoke to one of their techies online who suggested that my adapter may be faulty, I however don't want to believe that since it is a new item.

Also, my computer and console are equal distance away from my router and the computer works fine, so I don't think the problem is related to my router.

What steps can I take to fix this problem; or trouble shoot any possible causes?

It sounds like you bought a unofficial device not manufactored by Microsoft. if that is the case then I would play the device. I would replace the device with one manufactored by Microsoft. – Ramhound Sep 19 '12 at 12:29
Although not actually produced by Microsoft, this is the official adapter for the 360. – Calvin Sep 19 '12 at 13:12

Rather than contacting Microsoft, have you tried calling up MAX technical support to ask them for help? That seems more relevant than expecting a manufacturer to know about third party networking devices. Also, though its a game hardware this is more of a networking issue - you may get more help asking on superuser.

Some things you should look at:

  • Move console to be really close to the wifi router to check if it can pick up the signal
  • Check on the encryption supported; its possible for e.g. that you have the router set to WPA while adapter can only support WEP.
  • Even if console & computer are the same distance from router; it also depends on devices in the line of sight: do you have a microwave or CRT monitor etc. between router and console?
  • If the console is being housed in a metallic case that might create a Faraday cage that blocks communication.
  • Router settings could be a problem too if you have locked down allowed MAC addresses to a whitelist etc.
