In Mists of Pandaria, an item called 'Elder Charm of Good Fortune' has been added to the game. The purpose of this item is that once you kill a raid boss or world boss, regardless of difficulty, you will be presented with the opportunity to perform your own personal roll for a chance at additional loot.

If for whatever reason I have use my off spec for a fight, am I able to use these charms to roll for gear for my other (main) spec or are they limited only for the currently activated spec?

As of Patch 5.3, there is a Loot Specialization submenu accessible by right-clicking your portrait.

Using this menu, you can specify which spec you want to receive loot for, instead of being limited to just your current spec.

Blizzard Blog:

If you have one or more Charms of Good Fortune, then whenever you kill a raid boss (in Raid Finder, normal or heroic) then a new UI window will pop up asking if you want to spend your Charm on a bonus roll. If you click yes, then you’ll instantly get another shot at that boss’s loot table! You will always win something from the bonus roll, such as a pile of gold, gems, or flasks. However, you also have a small (but not miniscule) chance of receiving a piece of epic loot. As with the personal loot system, the item will always be something designed for your current spec. Also, just as with personal loot, the game doesn’t analyze if you already have the item, if the item would be an upgrade for you, or if you prefer axes to swords or anything like that.

You can respec to get an item for your other spec if you want.

I don't know how is defined the "something designed for your current spec" criteria, as I've already received an item not having spirit while being in a heal spec on my priest. The boss loot table did have a spirit version of the item. However, the item did not have any hit, thus was still 'useful'. – astryad Dec 5 '12 at 13:37
Some of the items have randomized stats on them. Overall, they count for any spec since there's a chance they'll have the perfect stats, but what stats you get is going to be random. – Ben yesterday
