I'd like to start playing this series but since there are more than 7 episodes, which one would you suggest to start with?

Generally I like complex games and I don't care about graphics much (I played tons of 4D games in the past). So if you think that Settlers 1 is the best, feel free to suggest it.

I started with Settlers 2, and IMO it was the best. I've played 3-5, kinda slacked off with 6 and 7. If you don't mind old ones, try this one out.

You don't have to do the actual Settlers 2, as that won't run on modern computers, but you can look for The Settlers II 10th Anniversary. It's a complete remake, exact same game play just with updated graphics and runs on newer computers.

Or you could just dive in with 7 and see how you like it, IMO if you start with 2, you'll see how it was originally meant to be.

3-4 stayed pretty close to the original, but after that they started doing it quite a bit differently, and I personally didn't like the changes.

I did a quick search, and you MIGHT be able to buy it from here. There is a demo, and that would give you a good picture of it, and perhaps take you into 7.

IMO the series went downhill when they abandoned manual route building and switched to automatic "beat tracks." Not sure what the latest versions are like, as I haven't kept up. Settlers 2 definitely is the best and is still a great game, even with the original graphics! :) – deceze Oct 9 '10 at 0:25
Actually, just digging a bit and looking at some "10th Anniversary" screenshots, the original graphics are probably better. It should run with a little tweaking in DOS emulators. – deceze Oct 9 '10 at 0:33
If you have an old monitor yes, with a new LCD I'm not sure perhaps. – Viper_Sb Oct 9 '10 at 1:21
You can get Settlers 2 (Gold Edition) on Not sure if it's the "10th anniversary" flavour or not, though. – Adam Lear Oct 9 '10 at 4:16
Just a note, the 10th Anniversary is not EXACTLY the same, as there are minor changes to the game (like the ability to upgrade military buildings to larger ones, which is probably the biggest change). – PeterK Oct 9 '10 at 8:00

To me Settlers 1 or SerfCity : Life is Feudal To me Settlers 1 or SerfCity : Life is Feudal is the best part of Settler series. Even I really love its graphic. I almost feel its village atmosphere there. Have been playing Settlers 2, well, the graphic is not align with the first version.

I always play this little game in a DosBox and enjoy its background music while working. Very pleasant experience
