Arqade is a question and answer site for passionate videogamers on all platforms. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This is a three-fold question that is not directly related to any single game, but generally to all MMOs.

As the background scenario imagine running tournaments for possibly thousands of players in different MMOs. How would you go about reducing the administrative overhead (or how would your dream tournament management software go about it)?

  1. Are there websites/softwares, which allow one to manage/organize a tournament for any game such that the administrative overhead is small? I know about all kinds of tournament software, but they usually require some organizer to enter all the details (participants, results, ...). For what I'm looking for consider the next question.

  2. As I haven't found any answer to question 1 myself, I am starting to suspect that I might have to roll my own. For that case, I'd like to hear about ideas for organizing online tournaments in a player-managed fashion.
Let me elaborate what I understand as "player-managed" a little bit further:

    • Players/Teams can sign-up to a tournament themselves - no administrator/organizer required.
    • The roster is automatically created and players/teams are informed about their opponents and schedule.
    • Results are reported by the players - no administrator/organizer required.
    • The system should be applicable to different MMOs with only little customization required.

  3. Especially, the result reports by players gives me a headache. Does anyone know any work/research on this topic, or has insights into how organizations like ESL handle it?
For the average match I assume this to be no problem. Winners will happily report their wins. Instead I worry about malicious players. What if both players report they have won the match?
    • Some games support 'proofs' in terms of screenshots, replays, log files. All of which could potentially be spoofed.
    • Some games support observers, which could take the position of referees.

Seems like Web Apps might be a better resource for this question, since there doesn't seem to be anything MMO specific in what you are asking for. It could just as easily be about Euchre tournaments. – bwarner Oct 12 '10 at 15:51
True, except the player-scaling becomes only important once you get to the size of MMOs. Additionally, I ask here in the hope that maybe players have come across something like it in previous tournaments they participated in. – Frank Oct 12 '10 at 16:47
You might get more help at stackoverflow. I've seen answers on questions like how does Microsoft compute gamerscore and they will likely be more ready to respond then anyone here. – Sadly Not Jan 6 '11 at 15:09

Konkuri is an online application that allow to manage a tournament or a league. I am not sure it will fulfill all your requirements, but this is what they offer:

  4. Painless schedule seeding: You can either manually pair up competitors or have the site make a random schedule that you can refine as you want.
  5. Easy results and standings management: Enter the scores and the standings will update automatically. Get complete round-robin tables with Played, Won, Lost, Tied, ...
  6. Various kinds of scores: Konkuri supports aggregate scores: best of N sets (like in Tennis), two-legged ties (like in UEFA Champions League), best of N matches (like in major USA sports leagues)

3 . Everyone will cheat. That is the reason for some authorized person. And even if there is some authorized person, there is chance that he will be cheated as well.

In most cases software should be specific to game. E.g. in some games draw make 0 points, in some 1. In some tournaments there are >2 teams participating in single game. If you have specific game in mind, it will be easier to suggest.
