Am I missing something fundamental with the new pink seraph weapons?

I mean they're good, really good weapons, but to get them you're looking at a lot of boss raiding - around 15 times per gun. I estimate that the pink items are roughly level with purple loot drops, making them rare, but really not that rare.

Anyone who's boss raiding a lot is going to have some pretty decent gear anyway, most likely all legendary gear.

I mean, the whole point of boss raids is an extended game for level 50 players, isn't it?

Fact is that the pink items, with the exception of the relic (which is also the cheapest item), are not as good as the orange items, but you're very very unlikely to get even one pink item without getting lots of orange items first.

So what's the point of them? They're so difficult to get, it feels like they should be one-of-a-kind awesome bits of kit, maybe with unique side effects. Instead they're, well, by the time you get them they're kind of meh.

Am I missing something?

Trolls have suggested they power up when killing things, common knowledge seems to indicate they're simply extremely poorly designed, like the raid bosses themselves. –  Prinny Brocka Nov 1 '12 at 0:43

@BenBrocka - actually I think the raid bosses are very well designed, but it's a tough challenge: how do you make a boss that's still tough for someone who can defeat Terramorphous in under 15 seconds? Obviously people have found ways around that still (they always will) but both new bosses gave me several hours of challenge figuring out the first time. –  Keith Nov 1 '12 at 9:22

They're well designed to fight them once. They are clever in that they take a long time to kill, but they're still not actually fun. The raid timer and the crystals thing are horrible design; it takes 2 weeks of non-cheating play to get one weapon. Multiply that by the fact the weapons suck and you've got horrible design. –  Prinny Brocka Nov 1 '12 at 14:32

@BenBrocka yeah, if the weapons were awesome, there was no raid timer and they were cheaper then I think it wouldn't be a problem. That suggests to me that the problem is balance, but Gearbox have put a lot into getting that right (more than with BL1) and so I feel like I'm missing something. Maybe there will be more crystals/shops in the next DLC that make it worthwhile, but at the moment they appear nerfed. –  Keith Nov 1 '12 at 17:48

Not sure I'd call the postgame balance better honestly. See The Bee and the asininely low orange drop rate. I don't think the postgame got the attention it deserved, even in the DLC oddly. Either that or it was considered and some really bad, MMORPG style decisions got made. –  Prinny Brocka Nov 1 '12 at 19:02
