What are the rare materials/drops in Minecraft? I'm talking about things you might never find, except perhaps in chests near mob spawners, or by some convoluted collection process.

I already know about saddles, records and slime balls. What other rarities am I missing?

Unique Item

  • Dragon Egg - only obtainable by killing the Ender Dragon

Rare Items

  • Saddles - Only found in chests in dungeons.
  • Record - Supposedly only gained by tricking skeleton into shooting a creeper with its arrow. However, I've obtained one by killing a creeper with my own bow/arrow before. Also found in dungeon chests.
  • Cocoa Beans - Found in abandoned mineshaft chests and rarely from Jungle trees
    • Cookies by proxy, as they are made from cocoa beans
  • Ender Pearls - A rare drop from a rare mob.
  • Blaze Rods - Flying mobs in the nether; hazardous to kill. Can be used to make a few other ingredients via Blaze Powder
  • Ghast Tear - Prone to falling into lava when you kill the Ghast
  • Melon Seeds - Most commonly found in chests in Abandoned Mine Shafts. You can also get them from NPCs.
  • Wither Skeleton Skull - A rare drop from a somewhat rare mob (Wither Skeleton).
  • Nether Star - An item drop from the Wither Boss

Rare Blocks

  • Mossy Cobblestone - Only/always found in dungeons
  • Netherbrick - only obtainable from Nether fortresses.
  • Emerald Ore - A new block that only generates in one biome, and generates between three and eight blocks per chunk. Used as a currency for trading with NPC villagers.
  • Beacon Block - An item crafted from the Nether Star.

Other

  • Bedrock/Adminium - Cannot be mined, found at bottom of map. Must be spawned through console to place.
  • Sponge, Gear - Cannot be found or made. Must be spawned through console.
  • Ice - currently unobtainable as a block, can only be made in a snow biome.
  • End portal and End portal frame - 27 end portal blocks per world and 36 end portal frame blocks. Possibly less because of terrain generation.

I've found at least 3 records in dungeon chests. – Brant Oct 28 '10 at 0:50
I forgot Apples and clay, but apart from that nothing is particularly rare. Once you reach bedrock, and learn how to kill a few mobs, the only rare items are those in chests. – Kurley Oct 28 '10 at 8:07
While rare clay is on GetSatisfaction, that is as a user complaint. No one from Mojang has aknowledged it as such. – Macha Dec 6 '10 at 21:03

@KBKarma: The rule is, just do it :) If I or anyone else don't agree with it, we'll roll it back or edit it ourselves. And if you have below a certain rep (3k I think), your edit will need to be approved. So basically, the system self-moderates, so knock yourself out :) – BlueRaja - Danny Pflughoeft Oct 15 '12 at 11:46
