I am currently in Kakariko village and I have caught all of the chickens for the lady who lost them (it is a side quest so you can get an empty glass bottle). I tried going to the ranch (where you can get Link a horse) but the girl there keeps telling me that the horse is afraid of me. I read that you need to learn a tune for the Ocarina so the horse will come to you but she keeps repeating the same line "she is scared of you".

I am not sure what I am supposed to be doing next and I need advice so I know what to do next.

This is so horribly vague. I dont think anyone can answer it as it is, please edit it to clarify where you are in the game so we can better figure out what your current objectives are. – Ender Jan 8 at 21:23

You are talking about quite a few different things here. – OrigamiRobot Jan 8 at 21:26
If you haven't been to Hyrule Castle, I believe you're supposed to go there next. The guard won't let you up Death Mountain without a note you get from the Princess, and that's where the next Stone is (but it's been about five years since I touched OoT). – REDace0 Jan 8 at 21:33
@REDace0 I have been to the castle and got the letter from Zelda. So I'm supposed to be heading to Death Mountain now? – user1768885 Jan 8 at 21:36

Any time you are stuck in Ocarina of Time, there are two things you can do:

  1. Ask Navi for advice
  2. Play Saria's Song (once obtained).

These will usually tell you what your main quest objective is at the moment. The chickens and the horse are both side quests IIRC, so you'll have to provide more information if you want advice as to the main quest.

Edit: As per the comments below and above, in this case, you're looking to head up to Death Mountain.

Sorry to sound like a noob here but... how do I ask Navi? I can only talk to her when she says "HEY" and the button to listen comes up... – user1768885 Jan 8 at 21:46
She tends to speak up fairly often, more often than a lot of fans would like; once you have Saria's song, you can speak with her that way as well. When she alerts you and you're not targeting anything, that's usually a reminder of your quest. – Yamikuronue Jan 8 at 21:49
Ya I noticed that once I start up the game she mentions something about "Death Mountain" once I go to Hyrule Field. – user1768885 Jan 8 at 21:53
@user1768885 Then yes, you're heading there. – Yamikuronue Jan 8 at 21:57

Additionally, if you're playing on the 3DS version, you can climb into one of the many Sheikah Stone and get a vision (hit) of where to go next. – KatieK Jan 8 at 22:40
