According to the developers, the game's multiplayer mode will not be compatible with the original:
I have the original Age of Empires 2. Can I play multiplayer matches with my friends who have the new HD version?
Age of Empires 2: HD Edition uses a different multiplayer service than the original version, so cross-platform matchmaking is not ...

Sounds like a bug to me. In fact, it sounds quite similar to what's described here (scroll down a bit to the "AI Update" section):
Age of Kings: Downloads
The Age of Empires II AI Update - This update addresses the issue where the computer player resigns after a few minutes of play.
That page has patch 2.0a, which applies to Age of Kings. You ...

I think the simple answer is
Get in close to nullify the war wagon's range attack advantage. Like all cavalry units, it is susceptible to pikemen, skirmishers and camels.
Here are some more tips, but it basically comes down to the same point

Pikemen are especially effective if they manage to get close. A practical approach though, is to use cavalry - especially light cavalry which are somewhat less susceptible to missile damage. Cavalry can close in fast and quite effective in groups.
Massed war wagon are pretty hard to beat and will take down much of your pikemen or cavalry before they get ...

Distance an enemy unit must be within when the computer player unit looks for a new target:
easiest: LOS (can be modified by sn-easiest-reaction-percentage)
easy: LOS (can be modified by sn-easier-reaction-percentage)
moderate: LOS * 2
hard: LOS * 2
hardest: LOS * 2
Computer players ignore relics on the easiest level.

I can see you've tagged this AOE 2 - we play LAN games of AOE 2 in our office network successfully with a mixed environment of Windows 7/XP machines. We did notice some issues with the colours in AOE on Windows 7 that were related to a clash with the windows theme - you can see the solution for that at: ...

After the game, on the Achievements page, tab called "Score", hover your mouse on a score value in one of the columns, and you will see a text at the bottom that describes the score system.
That is,
Military score is 20% of the resource value (cost) of all enemy units and buildings each player destroyed or converted.
Economy score is 10% of all ...

I'm not familiar with Age of Empires 2 scenarios, but I found a list of scenarios with explanations which includes Path Blood at a blog called Gaming Lan.
It doesn't include Michi, but there's an explanation up at Urban Dictionary.

I think you mean CHEESE STEAK JIMMY'S.
Here are a list of all the cheats taken from GameFAQs:
CHEESE STEAK JIMMY'S: +1000 Food
ROBIN HOOD: +1000 Gold
ROCK ON: +1000 Stone
LUMBERJACK: +1000 Wood
NATURAL WONDERS: Control nature (lose control of men)

You tried shutting down all running processes and that didn't help. That zeros in on the running services.
Further, since you can uninterruptedly play AoK immediately after a fresh restart, but cannot when eventually that ScrewThingsUp flag is set to true, that means the service is set to Automatic (Delayed) Start mode (or even Manual mode, but the ...

I don't think its Windows 7 actually. The scrolling glitch is something that happened back in the XP days as well.
Do you have a Zune? A lot of people who have experienced the scrolling glitch have had Zunes, and after uninstalling the Zune drivers and software the problem has been fixed.
Another fix that used to work for people was powering off the ...

Aside from the obvious cleaning already mentioned, games from the Age of Empires II era had annoying copy protection that relied on putting garbage data in areas of the CD that weren't technically within the CD-ROM specification in question (ISO9660, I think?).
Your optical drive would be asked by the copy protection software to read out the data in these ...

This answer applies to all AoE 2 variants, from the original to the Conquerors expansion to the HD release. There is no attack-move in AoE 2. Right-clicking on an enemy unit will order your military units to pursue and attack that unit, ignoring everything else along the way. If the target moves out of line of sight or dies, your military units simply ...

I have made an important discovery. It isn't a solution to the actual problem, but it is a superior workaround compared to the full OS restart:
You don't have to restart the computer -- it is sufficient to log out [from your Windows account] and then log in again!
This I can live with. It will not even terminate important Windows services, such as the ...

You can still play them online, if other people are actually in the lobbies is a different detail all together. Your best bet is to get friends to play the game with you. I'm not promoting illegal activity but disk sharing if they don't have it could get you some AoE1 and 2 online goodness.

Age of Empires II : Conquerers is being re-released as AoE2HD in early April 2013 on Steam. It will include all the usual Steam-based matchmaking features and will run stabily on Win7/8. If you don't mind paying for it again, you're going to find a very large player pool immediately upon launch. :-)

I don't know about Age of Empires I, but people still play Age of Empires: Conquerer's Edition online, on Tunngle.
It's available here:

Just register with a username, download the software, login, join the network of the game you want to play, go to LAN connection section in the game to view servers and start playing.

Voobly: They got a rating system where you receive and lose points for each battle win or loss. They got some nice features like download of recorded games of other games played. Maps for custom scenario, random maps like Michi, Land Nomad, Arabia and Black Forest usually played there.
GameRanger: Very fast client software (faster than voobly). They usually ...

I had some similar trouble with the game. I found this article(thread) quite helpful.
Open notepad and copy/paste the part below.
If you have Age of Empires II:

Start explorer.exe
If you have Age of Empires II with expansion:

According to this source a Battle Event is a one of the following:
Skirmish between at least 2 players
A huge battle between at least 2 armies
It happens often after long passive (peace) phases and it can happen only 3 times. The attacking party / aggressor gets the Battle Event, this is why Yellow does not have a Battle Event.
In your example the 3 ...

I had an similar issue with my original disc. It was because it was too scratched. It's possible that the drive in your laptop's disk drive (ie. the laser head) is dirty itself as opposed to the disc.
The other thing to ensure, specifically related to AoE2, is to make sure you're running the correct executable. You said you unstalled it but it may have left ...

- scroll in the opposite direction, see ...

The Zune software isn't the only software known to cause this issue in Age of Empires II. Monitoring software from certain motherboard manufacturers such as Abit have also been known to cause the scrolling glitch as well.
I suggest closing down every application that you have open and in the background then trying to play the game again. If it worked, one ...

Around Spring of 2006 I was trying to play via IP with a friend and we had all kinds of issues, then we tried out hamachi and it seemed to help out a lot. Not sure what all it did as I'm not good hardware/technical stuff, but it made that pretty easy. We were in the same apartment complex, but different buildings, and we each had our own ISP account and ...
