Developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, Age of Mythology (AoM) is a spin-off from the Age of Empires series.
AoM takes inspiration from the myths and legends of the Greek, Egyptian, and Norse civilisations, rather than from actual history.
Age of Mythology, like most RTS games, is based on
- building towns
- gathering resources
- creating armies, and
- destroying enemy units and buildings.
In this way, players are able to defeat and conquer rival towns and civilizations. Players advance their tribe through four "Ages": Archaic, Classical, Heroic and Mythic Age. Each age unlocks new units and technologies for the player, which strengthens their settlement.
Every player chooses a major god for their civilisation before the game begins. As players advance the Ages, they must then choose Minor gods to worship, which unlock differing technologies and bonuses.
The game featured both a compelling single-player campaign, and an excellent multiplayer experience, which could be played Online, or via LAN. It also featured a scenario editor, allowing players to build their own campaigns or custom multiplayer maps.
