RuneScape is an in-browser Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) developed by Jagex and released in 2001. The game is rather open-ended, not following a linear storyline, but allowing players to set their own goals within the game.
RuneScape was first developed in 1998 by Paul, Ian, and Andrew Gower originally under the name DeviousMUD. At this time, the game was private and was not released to the public.
On 4 January 2001, RuneScape was released to the public under what is now called RuneScape Classic. Later that year, Jagex was founded. On 29 March 2004, RuneScape 2 was launched. 9 years later, on 22 July 2013, RuneScape 3 was released.
Jagex have released multiple other versions of RuneScape. These include RuneScape Classic, OldSchool RuneScape, and DarkScape.
