http://store.steampowered.com/about/ says that right now Windows 8 is not officially supported. If something goes wrong, you're on your own. That said, I've been using Steam under Windows 8 for the last few months. There are no issues I'm aware of and pretty much everything I tried worked fine. YMMV

Short answer: Yes, It's fine to install it. If the game requires that version of the library, it won't run (properly) without it. Long answer: Frameworks like DirectX, OpenGL etc are (basically) just collections of common functions i.e. things which every program needs to do, but don't need to be reinvented/rewritten every time you write a new program. ...

I'll answer my own question. After playing on for a bit (up to level 131 now) it seems that the levels just go through a fairly repetitive cycle. Four out of every five levels can be completed using logical deduction only to find the way through to the exit (you don't need to guess or use pick axes/dynamite/maps). Then every fifth level (i.e. where the level ...

Right-click on the small window prompting you to pick DirectX version or Windows 8 touch mode, and select "Create Windows 8 Desktop shortcut". This will create a Desktop shortcut with the path steam://rungameid/8930//%5Cwin8 You can then turn that into a Start screen tile with the application of your choice (I used OblyTile) If you also wish to make this ...

Nearly all games I've tried on Windows 8 have worked through Steam. With the exception of Crysis 2 and Just Cause 2 as far as I remember. These should hopefully be fixed in due course anyway.

I appreciate all the useful info you guys have posted there. Here is what worked for me: Un-installed the game completely Install with minimum option (no additional languages, no punkbuster) By default, the shortcut to the game was using the 64bit version of the game, use the 32bit version instead. And Voila! The game started working again. I hope ...

The League of Legends Client runs on Adobe Air, so the issue could be with that software. I would check for updates to Adobe Air. You can also try running the client in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

I did the following and this worked for me: I uninstalled Microsoft Games for Windows and installed this one from the Microsoft website Right click on Grand Theft Auto IV in your Steam Library and select 'Properties' Select 'Local Files' Click 'Browse Local Files' Open the GTAIV folder Right click LaunchGTAIV.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

Note: I do not have Windows 8.1 so I cannot entirely verify this. Source. Windows stores apps like Jetpack Joyride in a folder located in your Program Files. It's a hidden folder so go to View -> Hidden Items. The folder is called "WindowsApps". In order to access this folder you'll have to take ownership of it. Follow these instructions to do that. Then ...

Change line 47 in composite.vsh from 'float timePow = 2.0f;' to 'float timePow = 3.0f; Changing it will get rid of the Invalid Program Composite error. --Source Possible change for Minecraft 1.6.2, may work for minecraft 1.5.2. Let me know if this helps, I'll keep looking otherwise.

It should suffice to launch Steam with the -bigpicture switch. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe -bigpicture Windows 8 boots to Metro, of course, so you may want to either use one of the Windows 8 "backwards compatibility tools" like Start8, or to run a very little script in AHK at boot time: Send #D ...or you can use Windows 7 instead (Windows 8 ...

Many graphics card manufacturers have not yet published updated drivers for Windows 8. Windows 8 comes with default drivers written by Microsoft that will make most GPUs work, but only enough to run Windows itself. These drivers are not made by the GPU manufacturer, so they don't use the hardware very well and provide only the most basic graphical functions ...

I was able to solve this problem by switching to the 64-bit client.

Set PurgeCacheDays to 0 and it will never be cleared, there is no size limit. If you want more fine-grained control, what you want is a cache manager, also called converter or extractor. This also allows you to host games with downloaded files (sometimes, success rate varies), if memory serves me right this is not possible with cached files. A cache ...

I found I had to disable both triple buffering, and bilinear filtering. Either one of these options cut the speed in half.

I found the fix. When I disable triple buffering it works fine. Looks like a bug wither with Windows 8 compatibility, or with the new video card drivers.

Try installing DirectX 9.0c. Some of the older DX9 files that were included in Windows 7 have been removed in Windows 8, and as a result, many games don't work. You can run the web installer found here or the standalone offline installer found here.

It runs fine on windows 8 pro 64 bit for me. Just make sure you have the latest video drivers installed that support windows 8

You might want to try running the game with administrator privileges, like this:

This problem is the result of missing entries in the windows registry file. If the game files are present on your hard-drive then this would indicate problems in the windows registry. The launcher reads the registry for the locations of the objects the links point to. If a link cannot be found the corresponding button will be greyed out. One way to solve ...

Some games I play on the PC offer "Custom Cursor" settings, which for some reason always hides my mouse. I have to go into options and turn it off. It's a pain, because the cursor is invisible, and you have to watch for buttons to change slightly most of the time.

Ok, I didn't let go and approached it again, and... I think I did it :) Here is how it worked for me: Installed ADK as per link provided by Matthew Read. Installed the database server from the installation options. Ran Compatibility Administrator (32-bit) (In Admin mode) In the column on the left, on the bottom selected New Database. The top bar - ...

You could try running the Sims as administrator and play with compatibility mode (like putting it on windows 7 or XP). You can edit this by clicking on the application file (.exe) with the right mouse button. Then select properties and go to the compatibility tab.

Not every game supports alt-tabbing. Games that don't support it can trigger this kind of behaviour, or worse: crash entirely. The easiest way to deal with this, is by running the game in windowed mode. If you want the game to fill your entire screen, there is the popular "Borderless Windowed" mode, aka. "Windowed Fullscreen". Unfortunately, this isn't ...

It is easy to blame the client as it does crash occasionally, but if it is repeatedly it has to be something on your computer. Typically you are missing some software updates. Try making sure windows 8 has all the updates as well as your video card. Even if you complain to Riot about it they will tell you, you need to upgrade your software. They are usually ...

Solution Run in Direct3D mode: hl.exe -d3d

Further testing I have done myself (as I had the same issue but with Windows 7) is that this issue is fixed by not using an extension (in this case I had the controller plugged into my keyboard). There is no difference depending on whether a USB 2 or USB 3 header is used.

Searching around the net, I found something which you should try: Run the setup.exe using compatibility mode XP SP2

You can run the Windows XP versions of the game relatively easily, as long as you have a Windows XP installed on another machine or VM. You can just copy the game exe files over from C:\Windows\System32\. You can also copy them from the install disk, but the process is a little more complicated. Here is an article with full instructions. To get the Windows ...

Try downloading this version of DirectX from Microsoft and running it: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 Even though it only says it updates DX9, it also updates components in DX10 and DX11. Running this fixed a very similar error message that I was getting.
