The Xbox is a sixth-generation video game console manufactured by Microsoft. It was released on November 15, 2001 in North America, February 22, 2002 in Japan, and March 14, 2002 in Australia and Europe and is the predecessor to the Xbox 360. It was Microsoft's first foray into the gaming console market, and competed with Sony's PlayStation 2, Sega's Dreamcast, and Nintendo's GameCube. The Xbox was discontinued in North America in 2009 (EU 2007, JP 2006).

The console introduced the paid service, "Xbox live", that enabled subscribers to download new content and connect with other players through a broadband connection. Support for Xbox Live on the console ended in 2010.

Its best selling games were Halo 2, and Halo: Combat evolved, which sold 8 million copies, and 5 million copies respectively.
