comment How exactly does armour and damage work in Elite: Dangerous
@pawel it's not linear - at certain hull thresholds more damage gets through, and even with 100% hull about 40% of shots get through (it depends on the weapon). There's a load of testing that could be done here and the devs deliberately keep the actual calculations secret. You also have to take the hit-zones (see the yellow spheres on the Imperial Courier pic) into account (something the testers don't mention) - Python powerplants are on the underside, so shots from underneath will kill them much quicker than shots from above.

@Pawel so looking at the example in that test there's a ship with 910 HP and one with 3900HP and the difference in how long it takes to kill their powerplant is about 3 seconds - when they both start at 100% hull. Once those ships have each taken 900HP damage the one with 10HP left will last a few seconds, while the one with 3000HP left will still take 20 seconds or so. That's what Mark Allen (one of the devs) says in his post.

@Pawel that section is pretty much lifted from the developers directly: forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=170205 - the test you linked appears to have been done against 1.4 (when HRP's didn't have any additional effect) but doesn't disagree with the content here: higher hull HP mean that modules take longer to kill and more damage goes against the hull rather than the modules. The real difference is at low hull rather than high hull - the total armour isn't what matters, it's the % of it that you have left.

@Ellesedil if you run away the Anaconda disappears and never comes back, but you can only complete the mission by killing it. Apparently if you get exactly 7km away (but not 7.01km when it disappears) then it will stow its hardpoints, and if you return it will take a minute to redeploy them. I've not been able to verify this as every time I try it disappears first.

@Ellesedil I've managed to get the shields down, but the small lasers do almost nothing to its hull, and all the while it's shooting back at me with turrets. In addition the Asp has lightweight bulkheads and no hull reinforcement - once your meagre shields go you have about 8 seconds to get out of range or into a blind spot before your hull is gone.
