comment Fix for “Forever Mourning” bug? (Vilkas not giving the “Purity of Revenge” quest)
For anybody following this, the recent 1.04 patch has fixed this bug (at least for me and others in my exact situation). :-D

I waited as far away as I could, for 33 in-game days (just in case). No change, other than Vilkas no longer constantly sleeping, but instead walking around. He still doesn't give the next quest, though. Oh well. Next time I play the game with a different character, I'll at least know better. :)

I just retrieved the Helm of Winterhold without killing a single Silver Hand at Driftshade Refuge, and returned it to the Jarl who asked for it. I then returned to Jorrvaskr and Vilkas still won't give me the quest. I'm going to try waiting 32 in-game days and try talking to him again. BTW, he's stuck in a mode where he will always be sleeping on his bed; if you talk to him, he'll get up, but when you're done he goes right back to sleep. It's part of the bug I guess.

I didn't realize it was a bug until 30-40 hours after observing it. I originally Googled what the next quest after "Blood's Honor" was, because I finally decided after doing various other miscellaneous and other questlines outside of the Companions' questline, that I should finish the Companions' questline so I could marry Aela. I hardly went into Whiterun or near Jorrvaskr other than to turn in "Blood's Honor" and then 30-40 hours later when I realized there was a bug. But I'll try the above (with hard saves, of course), and hopefully it'll work. :) Thanks!

I have about 30-40 hours logged in the game after having completed "Blood's Honor", so even if I did have a save from before I completed that quest, I wouldn't use it and throw away all the progress I made in the game. :( Do you know if it would be doable to just run through the dungeon, avoiding/hiding from all the enemies throughout it, get the helm, then do the same leaving (unless there's an exit near the end)? If so, I'll try that.

Sorry, I should have clarified. It's after completing "Blood's Honor" (where you kill the witches for their heads, for the lycanthropy cure), you return to Jarrvaskr to see the Silver Hand had attacked the area, and inside the building Kodlak is dead. You turn in the quest to Vilkas, but for whatever reason he doesn't give you the next quest in the line, "Purity of Revenge". Instead, he ends up going into "busy" mode (where you can't interact with him) and everybody is "forever mourning" the attack and the loss.

I have already returned to Jorrvaskr after killing all the witches (and looting their heads), and saw that the Silver Hand had already attacked and killed Kodlak. I turned in "Blood's Honor" to Vilkas, but never got the next quest, "Purity of Revenge".

Thank you! That's all I needed to know. I was afraid that the game was TOO good, in that it would completely change the world it's set in by removing entire groups of characters, etc. Good to know the developers allow players to be able to complete quests regardless of which paths they take. Would it be safe to assume that all quests are always available unless you fail them? Even then they can be re-done I believe. And quest-givers marked as "essential" cannot be killed, only hurt to near-zero health. Makes sense!
