Chaseg is suggesting creating a couple tunnels which form an outline of a large rectangle, then you mine every block within the rectangle. Branch Mining is far more efficient and involves exposing the maximum possible surface area (and thus minerals) with the minimum possible amount of digging. It's far more efficient than the method Chaseg describes.
Oct 20	comment	What do I do if my spawn point is in lava? Based on this not working for Anthony I would speculate your spawn point only changes if your spawn block is air (not if it is destroyed). Since Anthony's spawn point is in lava, lava will flow into the hole and his spawn point block is now lava, which is not air and so the spawn point is not changed. (I deleted + reposted this comment, I should stop doing that)

Survival tip for the future: Never venture underground without wood (preferably logs, since 1 stack yields an entire 4 stacks of planks). Workbench, sticks for tools and torches, building material, etc. If you're low on wood, plan to visit the surface again before you've run out.
