"We were somewhere outside Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive ... ' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming: 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?'"

Wound up clearing Fort Independence. Didn't really want to, but Protector Casdin took my Outcast Power Armor right off my body! (Got a tiny bit of negative karma, but stayed neutral and got the achievement. Now back to the quests!)

And I was wrong. Now that I'm back in my game, I see that I'm < 500 away ... :)

I didn't consider revisiting that ... Good call. Also thinking of trying to find (again) Dunwich ... Ghouls are a good slaughter for non-karmic XP. Too bad I'm so high up I'll start getting those darned Reavers ...

@Beska: Because I am, essentially, right about to level ... Yes, I'm a "couple thousand" away, but I'm close enough that I feel uncomfortable karmic questing ...

Way ahead of you there. Been using that tactic all along. It's just at the achievement points that I want to avoid questing (or at least karma questing) altogether. The currently-assigned quest I know will result in some karmic change (the simulation in Vault 112, I believe?), so I want to be level 20 before that even begins. :)

comment is there a specific difficult scenario with the leveling problem in Oblivion?
Baurus would be that guard, I believe. And every time I've played Oblivion, I've lost Baurus and/or Jauffre in this fight. Guess that's because I'm usually level 25 or 30 when I get there, now that you mention it! :)

comment Is there any way to get the original Fallout and Fallout 2 working on a Mac?
For what it's worth, I did end up buying the Windows version of the trilogy, if only because it's about $11 + shipping, and the Mac version has a ton of reported problems now that newer Macs don't support 256-color mode. It'll either go through WINE, VMWare or BootCamp. (Probably starting at WINE.)

comment Can you max out your level in World of Xeen without cheating?
Enemies don't respawn, sadly. OK, just have to remember to keep a hex editor around then ... :)
