Please answer these questions of mine -

Stackoverflow -

Need help? Have some questions that I may answer?
Is nobody answering your question? If you feel I may be able to answer any of your questions, mail me the link of your question. My mail ID is sandeepan (dot) nits (at) google's mail.

I like trying to answer those questions which are generally skipped by many highly reputated guys here lol. Sometimes they skip them because they don't have time to read long questions. I like attempting such questions and I think that could be my trick to earn reputation.

I am also active in many SE sites like programmers.SE, gaming.SE, onstartups.SE, etc. Send me questions!!

About me
I am a Software Developer/Designer from India. Here is my Brief Résumé on Stackoverflow Careers. Contact me at sandeepan (dot) nits (at) google's mail.

Other than programming I have deep interests in Human Psychology, Entrepreneurship, Social work and Scientific Research. While younger I had deep interests in Genetics, Astronomy etc.

I love computer games, especially FPS games on multi-player, cricket, music, racing and adventure.

I am a 24 years old guy and as time is passing by, I am gradually coming to realize that there are so many things to see and do in this beautiful world. I am afraid that a few years down the line I will repent over so many things I wished to do but could not do. However, I have started serious planning for all this.

@bwarner Thanks. It feels great to have asked such a good question.

comment How to tell cracked servers from genuine servers hosting these FPS games?
@Nick T - I knowingly asked a generic question, which can apply for all multiplayer games. Ok, adding Call of Duty in the beginning of the question. But I want to do this for several FPS games. Thanks

@Nick T - Is it? I have clearly asked "How to tell cracked servers from genuine servers?"

@Garet Claborn - yes, to begin with I think most probably I will go with a small group of players. I dont want to take much risk initially. Could you recommend some upspeed, downspeed values? What about the uplink of a server? You may post an aswer to my question gaming.stackexchange.com/q/20937/6421.

wow +1 for your complete analysis. And even I was able to purchase COD series only from Steam. Before that, I did an exhaustive search in lots of malls, CD outlets in the city but everywhere it was out of stock. And I got it from Steam with a 3 in 1 offer for lesser price.

It was difficult to decide. Bounty awarded to @Garet Claborn due his extra effort and for giving me some ideas to think, basically due to the thought process. But can't decide the best answer yet. I guess P2P with partial centralization kind of thing, if possible, will favor those with limited budget.

@Zoredache, @troynt and @all, which of the following answers do you think deserves the bounty? keeping in mind the points of expenses to maintain the server in a sustainable way, the difficulty in setting up P2P with partial centralization? I think the answer lies in what is the probability of success with P2P with partial centralization - if possible - this answer, otherwise not this answer. Your opinions please guys.

@Garet Claborn - I understand that you don't know about this particular game's server mechanics but what general approach would you suggest to proceed with this? Should the game's API be searched for? What if no APIs are available? How difficult would all this be? I still think your answer deserves the bounty but I will wait for some more time.

@Garet Claborn - Thank you for your answers. I understood the P2P part. I have asked this separate question regarding the finer details. Please check

Also, is it like these are two different ways - 1. going for P2P - getting a really nice internet connection and a few computers to run servers on. 2. renting a dedicated or VPS server?

Thanks for your answer. I guess the P2P architecture with partial centralization is something in between - A peer-to-peer system of nodes without central infrastructure (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:P2P-network.svg) and Centralized server-based service model (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fb/…). But could you please explain how is it going to help. I was not very good in these subjects during college but now I can understand better because I am very passionate about doing this. Any useful links?

Correction to previous comment - Do you mean something other than starting a server while playing? I know how to start a server while playing a game. Start/Join server options appear during the game. Is there something more than that? Am I missing something? Those who can answer some questions related to the actual details of hosting a dedicated game server can check this question webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/12465/…

Looks like you have experienced the problem and have some ideas. But could you please elaborate a little more. I could only understand your point 4 completely. Do you mean third party sponsorship is better than asking for game fees from gamers? I don't have any experience on this. Regarding your point no. 3, I too don't know about setting up video game servers. Do you many something other than starting a server while playing? Am I missing something? Thanks by the way for your answer.

Thanks @Dave DuPlantis, like I have already said, this question is not about any specific country but about all those countries where the problem exists and I guess the total number of such countries with this problem will be more than those without. However I agree that asking "how to set up a server for gaming no matter where you live" is another good way of asking the same question. Let me see what others say.
