comment Why can't I hire the Knights Templar?
@thegrinner Yeah, I think they were part of the crusade, but that's just from looking at where their leader was.

comment Is there an overall view of your cities?
Worth noting that you can cycle between your cities by hitting the left / right cursor keys from the city view, it's quicker than going in/out of a city list.

comment Subscribing to mods in Steam Workshop does nothing
See also my comment on gaming.stackexchange.com/a/75732/75 - note that after you've subscribed to a mod in steam you still need to enable it within the game.

comment How can I get mods from the Steam workshop?
I think it's worth pointing out that just subscribing to a mod doesn't actually mean it's enabled - it just makes it available within the game. In order to use a mod you subscribe as above, and then from the Civilisation V main menu, select Mods -> enable the mods you want (green tick) -> Next -> select Single / Multiplayer game (note that the enabled mods are listed on this page)

@AaronKurtzhals thanks I hadn't found that question, this can be closed as a duplicate of it, since I was interested in buildings (I've just tweaked the question to be specific to buildings)
