@Zoredache: it really isn't all that uncommon. the old microsoft gaming zone had been used to set up direct connections between players who hosted the games (such as age of empires) while the Zone software mostly just tracked IPs and account info. I know Final Fantasy XIV is now using torrent style p2p to reduce lag (and i think it is also the primary protocol for updating)

@Sandeep: Reading your other questions, you said that you only intend to host roughly 15 players. Unless that is going to grow, I think my answer is way too much work. Originally you had asked what could help gamers with similar issues worldwide who were stuck in a serverless bubble. So I was aiming for large scalability and low cost at the price of much effort. For 16 > people, I'd suggest getting a decent computer (4gb RAM + a few cores @ 2+GHz) and an internet connection with more upspeed than downspeed plus a static IP. Just set up a server and have fun unless you like the challenge.

I read somewhere that Call of Duty uses the same networking as Quake III. I would try to (a.) confirm this is true (b.) find someone who knows the engine well (c.) start making abstraction layers for the networking functionality

@first part: I don't know this game's server mechanics personally. In general you're going to have to find some way of deciphering the communication between application layer and transport layer or something similar. If you abstract both of these, the p2p network can appear the same as if it is a centralized network in communications. I appreciate those questions; hadn't thought that far into it :)

@Zoredache, second part: I don't think there's a perfect avoidance for cheating in many games, but would think along the lines of encryption and mixed processing. You have a task table (possibly centrally managed) wherein tasks are evenly distributed but not consolidated. Meaning a client wouldn't ever be processing an entire player's dataset and usually not their own.

IMO a very good example would be torrent trackers, that is what I would personally base this on most likely. You could track individual game sessions similar to individual torrents and clients as clients. Plus there's lots of opensource stuff out there to get you started.

Well you can go P2P either way. P2P is basically a way to offload the bulk of your bandwidth needs to the users. They each act as 'mini-servers'. When you have a central server(s) in a P2P environment you usually just want it to help set up connections between peers instead of actually hosting the game server. If you're able, you may want to build the service so that core parts of the game server are on your rented/owned server.

I always liked how sitting on the SPECIAL screen for about 5 or 10 minutes changes the music :P
