comment What does it mean for a game to be linear?
One thing to note is that there's a difference between linearity and player options. For example, in many shoot-em-ups you can select from multiple characters to use. The stage layout remains the same, the only change is the firing pattern and sometimes story. So even though you get a lot of replay value by playing different characters and using different strategies in the stages, ultimately the game is linear because you still end up traversing the same set of stages each time with the same objectives to complete the game.

@Christian There's a level of scope to in-game activity that you need to consider if you want to create a categorization like "linearity". That's why the definition is traditionally centered around one of level layout, story, and gameplay. The latter category, while present on occasion, is usually only present in the most extremely linear games. Ironic as it sounds, there is more than one dimension to linearity in video games.

@Christian When you evolve past the actual "game story" and head into "interpretive story" crafted by the imagination/perspective of the player, you leave the realm of being able to classify it as "linear" or "non-linear".

And games like Suguri or Kirby Super Star don't fit in the model of linearity/non-linearity by themselves, it should be noted. When you get into the level of different modes of play, the linearity is something which must be analyzed for each separate mode.

@Byron I haven't played Mass Effect. My general rule of thumb is "Is there a stage select?". It doesn't have to be a literal one, but the point is that in terms of objectives necessary to complete the game, there exists at least one point wherein I can choose more than one path. Non-linearity is, as it were, a gradient of many kinds.

@badp I would say the changes in gaming interface devices are as related to gaming as the cycling out of PS/2 ports in favor of USB mice in modern machines is related to programming.

Even if gamers might have caused the change, it was the developer's decision to carry it out. And Juan covers the point about your secondary question, we're not really designed for opinion questions. Rather, we're a system for questions that can be solved.

As far as "why did it phase out", that is not really something we are suited to addressing here. The choice to migrate from full-stick joysticks was one made by the game companies, and while we gamers can provide educated and logical conjectures as to the reasoning, only the developers have the real answer. You might consider asking on the Game Dev SE for what some actual game developers think about it.

Alright, seeing Quantumgeek's edit, I'm starting to understand that this is about what a "graphics set" does. This probably all spiralled into confusion because the comment "@antony.trupe It depends on what tile set you're using." implies that applying a tile set will actually change the colors of stones by itself.

@tzenes I am actually going to side with antony here, because I don't see this as a question about developing or configuring mods. It looks to me as asking what the default settings for a specific mod are, which to me classifies as "things that happen during play [in a legal mod]". I would consider it a valid question on this site, even if it might be more easily addressed on the source of the mod (I expect people actually include documentation with these things).
