I write too much Perl.

I'm an independent contractor specializing in Perl, automated testing and software engineering training. If you have a nasty snarl of critical Perl code untangled, or need a perl or CPAN module bug fixed, or want to train your developers in writing tests, or find your development time is in a code 'n' fix loop and need help, I'm your man.

Monsters? Destroying my walls? It's more likely than you think.

One item I will add to this is to use fire. With no crew to put it out, fire runs rampant through the ship. If you're having trouble reliably getting through the shields and doing damage fast enough, a fire weapon can save the day.

comment Does shooting reveal other friendly positions?
I have had team mates roll out this urban legend, even attributing it to merely rotating my hull. It comes from the enemy taking a tip from "How Not To Be Seen" and lobbing shots at likely sniper bushes even when no one has been spotted. Or from artillery splash damage aimed at the spotted tank. Or errant shots aimed at the spotted tank impacting nearby tanks.

comment Where is the auction house in Diablo 3 for the PS3?
Blizzard production director John Hight, "it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot," he added. "With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III." gamespot.com/articles/…

comment How can I sell large quantities of ore quickly?
This advice also works for tier 1 loot: melt it all! Except the best stuff, for example. Then sell the minerals. Buy orders in mission hubs prey on mission runners not realizing this. Canny marketeers will place buy orders for common loot significantly lower than its mineral value counting on unwary mission runners to bang the sell button.

comment How can I turn a profit with Missions?
You mention repair costs driving up your bills to where you lose money on each mission, but you've figured out the armor repper trick. I'm trying to figure out where you're losing money to help come up with an answer for you. Ammo? Hull damage?

Mind controlled aliens love to volunteer for this job! Of course, by that point you can probably just blow a hole in the roof and pour in grenades.

comment X-Com 1: Having a secondary weapon
Tip: you can carry a grenade in your off-hand and drop it before firing. Dropping from the hand only costs 2 time units as opposed to 8 or more to stow it. Just make sure it isn't armed...

comment Do the Steam versions of the X-Com games have the original bugs fixed?
This breathes new life into the game, and new conveniences. It can rename your soldiers for you according to their stats. It will remember what equipment each soldier had at the end of the last mission and auto equip them for you saving tremendous amounts of time. Making research dependent on capturing aliens makes the game tremendously more difficult and fights more interesting.

I'll add a few tricks: pop a smoke grenade before opening the door, the extra cover might save you; if there's a hole in the roof, toss in a grenade or three; use new recruits to open the door, not experienced soldiers; make sure there's nobody standing immediately behind the sucker--umm... hero who opens the door else they might get blasted, too; place units with good reaction to the right and left of the door. Also make sure to place the proximity grenade one space away from the door due to a bug.
