Apr 30, 2013 at 18:55 comment added SevenSidedDie @DanRasmussen I did end up using your idea of a water block gated by a piston. Works a charm, if a little difficult to set up right!
Apr 30, 2013 at 18:54 comment added SevenSidedDie @ChargingPun Nevermind, I was wrong about them needing skylight! They do need to blocks of height though, making a piston system challenging.

a working water collection system!
Apr 30, 2013 at 18:03 comment added SevenSidedDie @ChargingPun They are. But how would you arrange them to not block the skylight to the grass blocks?
Apr 30, 2013 at 17:22 comment added ChargingPun If memory serves, cows are taller than one block, meaning you could add a series of sticky pistons with pressure plates that would "encourage" the cows to go into the moat.
Apr 29, 2013 at 23:20 comment added SevenSidedDie @DanRasmussen I was wrong! Water doesn't destroy grass blocks. Apparently a single layer of water doesn't block enough light to trigger grass decay. However, the water streams prevent spawning entirely, as I discovered to my dismay and detailed in the edit.

Apr 29, 2013 at 21:54 comment added SevenSidedDie It's true for cow spawners too. My sign idea doesn't work (they don't rise up, so they drown), so I'm pondering other designs.
Apr 29, 2013 at 21:00 comment added NathanTempelman @SevenSidedDie Any idea how to gather them all together? I know that mob spawners won't work if there are more than a couple mobs within x blocks of the spawner, is that true for cow spawners as well?
Apr 29, 2013 at 20:32 comment added NathanTempelman Although, the grass hadn't decayed yet when I was using water and it still didn't spawn
Apr 29, 2013 at 20:25 comment added NathanTempelman I think you may be be right. I raised the grass a block and took the water out and it works. Seems the maximum distance down that cows can spawn is with the spawner floating one block over the ground. If I float water over the grass with signs, will they still spawn? And also should I raise the level another block? What's the optimal spawn height for a cow spawnner?
Apr 29, 2013 at 20:05 comment added dlras2 Good point - and I agree except that he may be looking to automate the process.
Apr 29, 2013 at 19:59 comment added SevenSidedDie @Dan Water destroys grass pretty quickly though, so that would considerably impair the spawner until all the grass grows back. Personally, I wouldn't bother with water since its easy enough to run around a small enclosure to slaughter everything.
Apr 29, 2013 at 19:54 comment added dlras2 Alternatively, place water behind pistons so you can let cows spawn, flip a switch and grind them all, then shut the water off and spawn more.
