Jun 13, 2011 at 1:35 comment added user9983 @Kissaki - Yes, if he wants to turn his machine off and still let his friend have access to the world, then something like dropbox is definitely the better solution. Personally, I leave my machine on all the time anyway and so does my friend who runs the Terraria Server software for our world. So that is the better solution for us. I have been trying to explain that there are different solutions based on the OP's situation but it seems to have gotten out of hand.
Jun 13, 2011 at 0:15 comment added Kissaki @Ian: For a dedicated server to run you still need a running computer. And that’s what I’m getting at. If he is not there to host a normal game, then he will probably not want to keep the PC running just for that. Anyway, the question was on playing and merging the same world.
Jun 13, 2011 at 0:12 comment added Kissaki Uh … You mean the ded I have in my folder is the one I downloaded? I thought I downloaded an noticed there was one distributed with the game anyway. If there really is no TerrariaServer.exe distributed with the game, then my fault on that part.

Jun 12, 2011 at 17:23 comment added Tamara Wijsman @OrigamiRobot: It's not an assumption, it's a fact. If his computer is off the other person will be unable to play, it's as simple as that. You are the one making the assumption here by assuming whether or not he would be logged in to Terraria, which only makes your arguing more subjective...
Jun 12, 2011 at 17:21 comment added user9983 @Tom - now you are assuming that his computer is off. "When he is not around" could simply mean that he is not logged in to Terraria.

Jun 12, 2011 at 17:06 comment added Tamara Wijsman @Ian: I'm quite aware of that as I'm running tMod myself; this is not an answer to the OPs problem. And as you state it works exactly the same and runs continuously whether or not there are players connected...
Jun 12, 2011 at 17:06 comment added Tamara Wijsman @OrigamiRobot: The OP is asking "to let his friend play in single player if he is not around", I don't see how he can do that when his computer is off. If it's as simple as leaving the computer running with either version then the OP wouldn't have asked this question...
Jun 12, 2011 at 17:00 comment added Ian Pugsley @Tom, read terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Server_Console - there is a console application you can download from the Terraria website. It works exactly the same as the play and host; you've got your world and your port. It runs continuously, whether or not there are players connected.
Jun 12, 2011 at 16:36 comment added user9983 You can run the dedicated server on your own machine. I'm not talking about dedicated hosting.
Jun 12, 2011 at 16:28 comment added Tamara Wijsman Read the question again. He was running the host himself and he can't get dedicated hosting...
Jun 12, 2011 at 15:42 comment added Ian Pugsley Kissaki, as @OrigamiRobot said, the latest version the game only has a "Host and Play" option. For either person to play alone at any time, running a dedicated continuously seems like the best option.
Jun 12, 2011 at 15:13 comment added user9983 If you run the dedicated server, no one has to be there. When the asker is not there, the server is still running. It is exactly what he wants. What comes with the game is the "Host & Play" option which is different than a dedicated server.
Jun 12, 2011 at 12:08 comment added Kissaki The dedicated server is also included with the game distribution. As the asker plays himself, he will have that. Also, the questions point was: What to do when the asker is not there. So I don’t think a (ded.) server is an option.
