I live out in the country, and cannot travel easily. Is there any way I can achieve things like selecting a team?

EDIT: The consensus is that I DO need to visit (or at least be near) a gym to pick a team. Also noted is that I don't have much need to join a team if I don't plan to visit gyms and contend for primacy. I can go on collecting Pokemon (I have 54 in the 5 days I've been playing) and improving them as I collect more XP and swag (stardust and candies). I play to give myself something to do as I walk around the property for cardio exercise. Thanks to all who contributed.
