However it is possible to plant a seed even at a low light level in 1.12.2, which was what I tested and then I assumed that the "popping off" wasn´t implemented either. The seeds will pop off after a block update in 1.12.2, if the light level is too low.

Run a hopper minecart under the garden and shut off the lights. Turn back the lights on and the villager would replant everything.

Jun 23, 2019 at 14:29 | comment | added | user232393 | @Reflexive The feature seems to have been introduced in 1.13, but I don´t know the exact snapshot. It is present in 1.13, but not in 1.12.2.
Jun 23, 2019 at 14:13 | comment | added | Reflexive | I thought this was a joke but decided to put a light down and all my crops exploded. When was this mechanic introduced? Or am I only noticing this now because I've never grown them in a cave before? +1 For the best answer I've ever been given btw.
